Wednesday D [DECEMBER] 31th [ST] 1834 Commences with fresh breezes from the N & E Steering West At 2 PM made Cape Frio bearing W by N. Dist [DISTANCE] 25 miles At 4 Do. [DITTO = P.M.] steered off SW untill [UNTIL] 11 Do [DITTO = P.M.] hauled up W.S.W. At 12 midnight wore [A]round headed offshore Head yards aback. At 2 AM wore in shore and made sail Stood in for the land. The wind hauling out to the NW and pleasant Hands employed in beatting [BEATING] ship to the windward Rio de Janeiro bearing NW by W Dist [DISTANCE] 30 miles. So ends. Thursday Jan 1th [ST] 1834 [1835] Commences with moderate breezes from the S & E Steering in for Rio At 4 PM abreast of that[?] island or the lighthouse At 7 Do [DITTO = P.M.] passed Fort Santa Cruz At 9 Do [DITTO = P.M.] came to below Villeagignon [VILLEGAGNON]. At 8 AM was boarded by the Custom House board [OF] Health & pass[ED] boat. So ends this day.

Friday January 2th[ND] 1834 [1835] Commences with moderate breezes from the S & E At 2 PM weighed anchor and got underweigh and proceed farther up the harbor At 3 came to between Fort Villegagnon and [???] Island Employed in stripping[?] the mast
