Ship Telegraph Cruising for Whales on the coast of Chili [CHILE]

Tuesday April 14th 1835 Commences with fresh gales from the WSW and clear Steering off N.N.W. Middle & latter hours the wind hauling to the West At 9 A.M. the wind NW The ship heading off to N.N.E Saw not a spout of a Right whale this day. Unbent the Fore Top sail Bent an old one Hands employed in repairing it. So ends. Longitude by Chron [CHRONOMETER] 77..31 West Lattitude [LATITUDE] by Obs [OBSERVATION] 45 35 So [SOUTH]

Wednesday April 15th 1835 All of these 24 hours strong gales attended with squalls of wind & rain Wind NW Steering in N.N.E untill [UNTIL] 2 P.M. tacked ship to the S & W. At 12 midnight the wind hauling to the S & W Tacked ship to the Northward Saw a bark ship steering to the S.S.E. This day saw a great many Fin Backs [FINBACKS] but no Right whales Hands employed in mending an old Main Top sail and making a close Mizen [MIZZEN] of an old Spanker So ends this day. 2 men off duty. Thursday April 16th 1835 Commences with fresh breezes from the South Steering North untill [UNTIL] 8 P.M. Steered off N.N.E. At 8 A.M. E.N.E. At 10 do [DITTO = P.M.] the Island of Guafo bore S.E by E. Dist [DISTANCE] 35 miles. At 11 do [DITTO = P.M.] steered in for the island. This day unbent the Main & Mizen [MIZZEN] Top sails Repaired them Stowed them away and bent others in there [THEIR] places So ends this day. 2 men off duty. Friday April 17th 1835 [A MIXED MEDIA, VERTICAL DRAWING OF A SPERM WHALE SPOUTING BLOOD APPEARS IN THE LEFT MARGIN] Commences with light breezes from the South Steering in for the Island of Guafo. At 2 P.M. saw one Sperm whale Lowered Struck and killed Took him alongside and lay by him throught [THROUGHOUT] the night. Middle & latter hours pleasant The wind hauling [A]round to the Eastward. At 12 midnight steered off from the land. At 6 AM commenced cutting our whale At 10 do [DITTO = A.M.] finished cutting and commenced boiling Steered in for the land. So ends this day. At 10 do [DITTO = P.M.] strong gales attended with rain Stopped boiling The wind hauling to the Southward Steered West offshore untill [UNTIL] 8 A.M. Hove too [TO] heading to the S & W. At 4 P.M. finished boiling At 4 A.M. coopered our oil and set it down in the Blubber Room The quantity being 36 bbls. So ends Saw not a spout of a whale this day. At 5 do [DITTO = P.M.] made the land of Chiloe bearing E.S.E. Dist [DISTANCE] 35 miles. At meridian Point St. Carlos bore S.E. Dist [DISTANCE] 40 miles. Saw nothing remarkable this day.
