Wayland's Elements of Morality.

At the close of the Session the Revd Professor Romanes resigned his office of Professor and Trustee in consequence of family arrangements requiring his presence in the old country. The Trustees accepted his resignation with sincere regret. On the 11th July following the Revd John Malcolm Smith M.A. of Galt was appointed in his stead to the chair of Classical Literature. The Revd Dr. Machar was at the same time appointed permanent Principal of the University while the Revd Professors Ulquhart and George were requested to continue in the discharge of the duties of their several departments as heretofore.

have a high appreciation of his fidelity in the discharge of his duties in connection with this trust- of his attainments as a scholar and of his whole bearing as a Christian gentleman."

Two of the Professors, The Principal and Professor Mackerras, had been much engaged during part of the last two years in arduous extramural labours in the prosecution of the Endowment Scheme, and the College still continued to feel the effects of the depression caused by the financial crisis through which it had so recently past, but from this year onwards the tide of prsoperity began again to rise and has never since ceased to flow.

All the Classes in Arts and Theology, which had hitherto been conducted at great inconvenience in the old building, were this Session transferred to the large and commodious building formerly leased to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. There, under the careful training and instruction of their Professors, in daily Class work, and monthly written examinations, the Students continued to be distinguished by their diligence and progress. But the Principal could refer to other tests of the Education given at the College, "more deserving of notice because of their strictly independent application," when, with well grounded satisfac-

The point I would wish especially to consult you about is, what you object to, that is a reference to Doomsday Book.

I do not quite understand why you should object. The Tablet cannot tell the whole story possibly not 1/4 of 1 percent and the aim is to refer the reader to the place where he can get more information if that be his wish. The Tablet is merely an index to Doomsday Book. That is the view which the late principal must have had when he designed another Tablet which you will see on the walls with the following words inscribed thereon. V S S

1900-01

Arrangements were proposed to the Rev. John Sharp, M.A., late Professor in Morvin College, Quebec, to take up tutorial work in Philosophy and English.

A memorandum from Principal Grant brought up a question of some moment to the University, and which received much attention for several years thereafter. It was a proposal to make such a change in the Constitution of the University as would give the graduates and benefactors a larger share in the Government of the Institution, and would place the Theological Faculty, which had hitherto been a department of the University, under a separate and independent Board appointed by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church.

The matter being one of grave importance, the following representative Committee was appointed "to examine the whole question, and present a report to the Board at its autumn meeting":

"The Chairman, the Chancellor, the Principal, Dr. Campbell, the Moderator of the General Assembly, Dr. Herridge, Dr Milligan, and Messrs. D.B. Maclennan and F.H. Chryster to be the Committee."

And in view of the honorable part taken by the Presbyterian Church in founding Queen's, a clause was added to the Report to the Assembly asking that Court to appoint a Committee to confer with the Committee of the Board.
