1863 June 14th I staid at home Nannie Sallie & Kate went to meeting no rain Gave Jacob 2 ps Bacon about 18 lbs & small Pot Lard - Kate here Miss Sarah McC came to day

15. I went to Court for Est. Plowing & weeding corn on creek & finished, - clear day -

16. 17 18. Weeding down Tobacco. Planted some corn in new ground. began yesterday morning to Lay by Corn in fresh ground above Neale House worked out Sweet & Irish Potatoes & sugar Kane & Peas & young corn, Plowed Neale Truck Patches Mr Neale my overseer settled yesterday & he started to Richmond this morning. I agreed for his wife to stay in the house till Oct. & have her Patches & Harriet is to work for me when I want her he owes me 12 days which she is to work & more If I want her, at 50¢ a day after the 12 days as [?]

19th Fine Rain last evening. planting Tobacco this morning greens Pepper etc

20 Plowing & chopping corn to day - cloudy & like for Rain

21 Went to Abram Neals Funerale preached by Bro H.

22. Sent to Bro Tuckers for 300 lbs fodder bot of him @ $5 pr 100 lbs. weeding down Tobacco this morning Smith halling wood this morning - weather dry George Edd Coleman we hear is sick in Richmond

23. Plowing & Laying by corn replanting corn on Creek. Plowed & worked out Cotton hilling up Irish Potatoes, cloudy this morning

24. Plowing corn & finishing Cotton Patch broom Corn etc. & then weeding down Tobacco. - I am going to my Plantation & to Riceville to day.

25. began to Rain last evening & continues yet till this evening rather cool,

26th. Raining this morning & last night replanting Sugar Kane Sent to Mill nearly 2 Bbls Corn for meal Fine weather indeed - replanting Tobacco Mr Bybee got 2 Bales Cotton from Mr Hagood this morning 1 for me 1 for the Est No 6. not pd for now.

26th. June 1863 went to plantation after wool Corn sheller corn & shattered corn & some oats cleaned - Rained 2 showers fine weather for every thing.

27th. cloudy fine growing weather fixed Bees & some Gums Bushing oats sent to Mill got nearly 2 Bbls meal Sold Mr JamesHarris my Good & fine Tobacco made here last year 1862 he examined it. I am to prise it in working order & deliver it in Lynchg or nearer He is to pay me for it $1. pr. pound or $100 pr 100 lb cash trade I carry it to Lynchg as soon as Harvest is over & I can get it prised

28th. Raining this morning little cooler -

29th Fine day rained all night moderately last night thinning & setting corn to day - Raining today

30th. Fine growing morning - Jerry & Kate came last night in the rain, Jerry came for 25 days. began to Cutt Rye & wheat . . . . .

July 2 & 1st. Cutting wheat 1st. plowing cloudy & like for Rainworking in Tobacco & corn warm growing weather at this time,

3rd Finished weeding Tobacco & Corn in new ground Plowing & laying by next to Mr Keens Hot weather

4 Finished Cutting wheat to day Plowing & working Sugar Kane pt Layed by. Rained night before

5 went to meeting Mr J. Lovelace etc Funerals Rained at night nearly all night

6th ground wet Hot Sultry weather Halling Logs to Keens Mill. Carried to day 3 - Logs & 2 turns Corn for meal got 1 Turn to day

7th Sent claiborne to mill & Carrd 2 Logs to day working on Roads Henry fixing to sett up Hhd Rained last night & this morning again & all day

8th. Rained all night. Set up 1 Hhd yesterday & to day Halling Logs again to day 3 Logs in all 8there now

9th I went to Post office & aspen Grove What somewhat Injured [sproalld?/sprawled?] a little here & there, getting sills for corn House began to Plow sugar Kane & Peas etc

10th. Pulled up flax working sugar Kane Plowing corn etc & garden Henry son Henry claiborne & smith got out 40 lb Bacon to last till 10th augt next.

Vixburg fell 4th July 1863. Lee & his Army is in Maryland and Pennsylvania – Plowed out Garden choped corn in fresh ground & began to hall up wheat Kitty working in Garden

11 went to meeting S S. Mr H. few there

12 went to meeting. got home in evening & I think a tremendous Rain fell here Rained nearly all night

13 Every break[?] & creek is overflowing & some ours what gone on the Creek, water all over the corn Bridges branches & Creeks very full all water gates or [?]gone It has been raining of[f] & on for near 3 weeks. Wheat spiling [spoiling?] very much Oats & Corn down on the ground

14. Rained nearly all night cloudy this morning setting corn on Creek sent claiborne to help Mr Keen fix his mill dam which was broke -

15th. began to Oats to day Harriet at work here

16th. Jere Bot him a Horse some days ago of Philips $530. & started back to the Army this evening Joseph Whitehead & Jno Lewis with him, cloudy & like for Rain cutting some Oats this evening Rained hard this evening

17th. Hewing Corn House sills etc. Raining again & has been for 3 or 4 weeks dreadfull time on wheat Oats & every think else wheat Injured very much my wife & Sallie when [went] with Jere yesterday up to Kate S Moses, Dreadfull time indeed

18. 19 We were trying to do something but not much raining

20. I went to CH Mr Hunt & myself on Sunday did not rain

1863 July 20 & 21th at Pittsya CH Settling accounts; Haled up wheat Plowing Tuesday I came home 9 or 10 oclock in the night rained that evening nearly finished next to Susan Roarks laying by Corn, cloudy yet

22nd. laying by Corn working new ground Tobacco stayed at home all day nearly all my destroyingoats at Keens

23rd. laying by Corn. Halling Oats from Keens working new ground Tobacco cloudy this morning – we have lost 5 of our Hogs lately & more sick

24th. Plowing Sweet & Irish Potatoes & Cotton at the House till 12 oclock & then laying by Corn on Creek went Plantation yesterday & Mount Airy

25. laying by Corn on Creek working hilling up our Sweet & Irish Potatoes & Cotton. etc

26. Plowing on Creek till 12 oclock then finished Plowing Cotton Plowed Peas etc & negroes plowed their Corn & worked their Potatoes etc evening

27th my wife & Sallie went to see Mrs Glenn Rained at night

28. Plowing Sugar Kane & Lot Corn Hilling up Tobacco

29 Raining to day & yesterday working in Tobacco some yesterday Henry gone to Yates Mill to day 4 Bus Corn 3½ Bus wheat for flour & Horses to be shod & some little things also to be done I went to Plantation with Henry

30. Plowing Corn & Tobacco fencing in morning

31 Stacking Oats Ben here Plowing on Creek etc.

augt. 1st no Horn White cow had her first calf Stack Oats too damp & had 1 stack to take downdayn

2nd on Sunday & put it up - again

3rd work on worked here put out Tobacco.machining wheat at old place to day -

4. 5 & 6 Prizing good Tobacco & finished Hhd sold Mr Harris & Plowing & Hilling Tobacco up etc went to Mount Airy after County Salt & got it

8 Prizing Tobacco Hilling up Greens & at work in Garden weather getting dry a little,

10. went to meeting machined wheat here & oats finished prizing Tobacco - choping corn etc

12. 13. 14. 15. Ben to Lynchg sold Tobacco for myself & Est. JDH got back Friday night choping corn finished Choping in Tobacco worming & succoring Tobacco Saturday. not much Rain here this week ground very dry =

16th Started to Court Sallie went with me

17 Come back dry weather Shrubing picked Turnip Patch, wormed over Tobacco. –

=19th. Fanning out wheat We have had a very wet summer & spring untill about the 10th august, & it has been dry ever since & the Corn is suffering we think for Rain here, tho fine rains in some places last week

21st. We have been mach[in]ing wheat choping Corn working tobacco But one press Cider working out Garden been to Lynchg. Sewed Turnips etc Since the 10 augt weather has been very dry. all the spring & summer has been wet till augt 10th. then dry & Hot, the month of May & June was very wet & cool - awful times short Oat & Wheat crop now dry & the Corn crop will be short & every thing else

22nd, Give Out to Henry son Henry claiborne & Smith 30 lbs Bacon with some butter milk to last till 22nd September September Sent claiborne to Yates Mill 5 Bushels wheat for flour 5 Bus. Corn for meal,

23. 24. 25. Sent to Mill got 2 Turns Corn from aspen Grove. worming & succoring Tobacco Took Bee Tree in woods Saturday night Pride started to school at CH this morning Ben has gone after sole Leather & carry him to school Kill Lamb this morning my sheep brot up here from plantation

26 cloudy & like for rain, Recd this morning 3 Bushels wheat for toll last year for thrashing wheat shrubing & Henry & Smith at
