1863 March 28th Raining again this morning began to sew Oats again - Sent Henry to old placeto Roll Logs
29. March tolerable clear day stayed at Home
30- " Sewing Oats in fresh field next to Keens. claiborne coltering in new ground Sent little Henry again to Roll Logs. Grubbing cutting stalks burning brush heap in corn field –
31st. Rained snowed etc last night this morning Thrashing oats oats. mending or making warping Bars I am going to old place to get out vinegar for Mrs Keen –
april 1st. clear & windy Raised negro House got top on
" 2nd. clear & cool this morning halling wood Winding oats Plowing & sowing oats to day 3 plows I am going to McDaniels to see about Jerry a pr of Boots, - ,
3 Sewing Oats to tho it rained this evening I went to Yates got shoes nailed on Hester Yates found 1 shoe went to Plantation C. Tuckers Buck Tuckers & Hodnetts etc
4th Sewed flax seed here & at Plantation Sewing oats Halling out manure here malling etc – – I went to Edge Hill, & expect to go this day the 5th To Green field to meeting.
6th. Stayed at home Mrs Hunt Mrs. Coleman & all the children here Saturday Sunday & Monday
7. 8. 9. 10. Sewing Oats Plowing in new ground cut & malled malled some sewed at 45 Bushels oats here this spring weather moderate but cool.
14th. april - Halled up stack fodder off Branch at home & one about 10 days ago breaking up orchard Planted 2½ Bushels Sweet Potatoes nearly coltering in new ground never will get it done seems to me, Mr Bybee spayed & Cut 4 shoats at Plantation & 2 Calves Turned out 1 Sow & 1 Bull down there altered & marked 3 shoats here to day. —

1863 April 14th. Bedding Corn Land, fixing Bridge to Granary & working in new ground Sent this evening 10 Bushels Corn to Keens for meal for us & 1½ Bus. wheat for Chop & 1 Turn ½ Barrel Corn for Neal –
15. Raining nearly all day, sent to mill & making Gate facing new house chimney etc
16. 17. 18. I went to Lynchg for Estate, halled wood listed corn Land & at work in new ground halling manure on Lot. etc etc 1 or 2 my large size shoats missing.
19. 20. 21. went to Court Carrd Miss M. Coleman Plowing or listing for corn halling out manure found Lila sick last night. Same work 21st cloudy & like for falling weather
22nd Began to Plant to day Halling out manure & Listing & Beding for corn –
23. Raining last night & to day Hackling flax spining making brooms etc etc – –
24 Carr[i]ed not quite 3 lbs flax to miss neals to spin this morning & expect to get some spun to day
25th Halling Logs from Mr Hancocks waggon & Cart to Keens Mill for Corn House. I have been to Plantation Lila sick Kitty washing – Halled 2 Logs from home 1 10. feet 1 16 feet pine Halled 4 Oak Logs & 3 pines from Hancocks new ground
26th Halled up stack fodder this morning listing scattering manure Halling Rails for cow Pen Halling manure Kitty at work in Garden At home by myself Nannie gone to Mrs Colemans Sallie gone to Fannies etc —
27th Listing corn ground Planting & Halling out manure on Corn Land fine day Jenny Plows very well
28th. Planting corn simbling & Pumpkins on branch below Susan Roarks, I took a long Journey to day to Roaches Tan Yard to get leather for Jerry a pr Boots & then to McDaniels failed to get any leather & also failed to see

to see McDaniel had my long ride all day & rained about night for nothing in this world
29th Finished planting high land corn to day Fixing land for Sugar Kane Greens & Cotton etc.
30th Raining to day shelled corn planted Greens stilled cider & finished
May 1st Plowing & Halling wood Halled up 1 Stack fodder off Creek Aunt Peggy Here Since 25 March 1863. that is we have been finding [smudged]
2nd Planting Peas Palm cristal seed cotton water mellon musmellon Cucumber etc etc – Halled up all our fodder as it was [?ole] on the Creek I am afraid we shall [have?] nothing to feed on
3rd. I went to meeting S. S. nobody there hardly Nannie gone to Mrs Colemans – fine weather
4th. We are finishing plowing here this morning planting Irish Potatoes etc Rained & stoped us, runing water furrows after the Rain in upper Lot. Sent Smith to Yates shop & mill for me - 1½ Bus. wheat & 3 HH brot [home?]
5th. Planted Corn by Kitchen gone to Halling in new ground Kitty at work in Garden to day planting Beets Tomattos etc etc fine morning - clear [?] Henrys gone on Creek to Bedding for Corn
6th. began to Rain yesterday soon in evening & Rained all evening Sent claiborne to Yates Mill this morning 8 Bus. wheat for flour Large Iron Pin to weld 4 Lynch pins to make [?]ox staple to mend, etc – – cloudy this morning spread out our flax again this morning
7. fixed garden gate Henry H[os?]ing down House, Balance Cutting Rained yesterday malling & cleaning up in new ground – I went to Plantation
8th. working in new ground & on House rained part of the day. Mr Bybee went to CH. after Salt. got 4 [lost in margin] the head. got back in one day - Rained. S[?]lly at night Cloudy this morning, Rained last night.

9th May 1863 Coltering in new ground & Hilling Halling up last stack Oats to day
10th. went to meeting Sallie & myself
11th. Plowing on creek for Corn balance Hilling in new ground fair fine weather
12. Shrubing & Plowing on Creek for corn I went after my nails to Roarks & to Hagoodetc Fair fine weather weaning Hesters mule Colt now fair fine weather ——

14th. Sent claiborne to Mill 4 Turns corn 10 Bus. & 1 Turn for Neal. likely for Rain trying to get done planting Creek Corn this morning Sent Smith to Post office to day –

16. Hilling & coltering in new ground expect to plant Greens this evening Corn etc etc fair weather
17th stayed at home sick –
18 went to Court with Mr DR Hunt sick replanting corn & plowing corn –
19 I come back from court finished rep lan[t]ing corn still plowing Brot Polly home from Bolantz

29 Raining this morning weeding & Plowing corn If it stops raining gone to draw collard & Tobacco plants to plant
30. 31. May Replanted Cotton Saturday Sunday I went to Mrs Whiteheads to see Mr Glenn & hear from Jerry

1863 June 1st. Replanted Sugar Kane finished weeding down our Sweet Potatoes. replanted 4 rows by oats corn weed out first planting [Bas?] & Sugar Kane
2nd Replanting corn on creek I went to Plantation Sent Smith to shop to get Horses shod & 1 colter p[a]inted, ¬
3rd I have been up to see Ann to day who died last night Plowing & weeding corn to day
4th Plowing & weeding corn —
5th. Shearing sheep to day Sent Henry to aspen Grove to help, cloudy & like for rain Mr. Neale was carried off this morning Fine rain replanting Tobacco here this evening
6th Replanting Tobacco. Plowing & weeding corn
8 Plowing & weeding corn stayed at home yesterday, very cool this morning – replanting some Corn to day — Cool enough for frost
9th Weighed out Bacon for Big Henry son Henry claiborne Smith & Kitty 39 lbs for Henrys gang & 8 or 9 lbs for Kitty - to last till 9th. July next working out Cotton Potatoes etc etc here this morning
June 10th 1863 Sent Jerry to the Army by Mr Jno D Glenn 1 pr Boots 1 shirt 2 pr socks and 1 pr Bottle Brandy for Mr Glenn Jerry & Harvey the Brandy& sent some pound cake in the Boots.
11th. Coltering & Hilling in new ground yesterday & to day like for Rain, ground in fine order to Hill at new ground
12th. Finished yesterday Hilling new ground & began to Plow corn on Creek & this day began to weed down there one of our cows had a Calf in woods Pasture next to Mr Keens & young White & Red cow no Horn had one about 3 weeks ago being 3 Young Calves in all here
13th. Little sow has got or host her pigs. Plowing & weeding corn on Creek. Sent Smith to Mill this morning after Turns meals there ground, Sent ½ Bus. for Mrs Neal
