The Turbine wheeles will give 75 to 88 pr. ct. See Frances' Lowell Hydraulic Experiments. They are cheap. He thinks they may be made & put up for about $500 -Leffell of Springfield Ohio makes the best wheels-those used at Rochester N.Y. are used by him. Stout, Mills, & Temple, also make good wheels at the same place. Often no geering is required, the mill stone being placed directly upon the shaft of the wheel. One wheel usually geered to two runs of stone. Thinks it important to know exactly the quntity of water running in the canal.

Anti-attention metal- 2 parts Antimony, 1 part Copper & 3 pars tin, afterwords softened by re-melting with more tin-prevents friction & heating of gudgeous &c (Weisback 1p 146) Called also "Babbitt Metal" Frances p 6.

Measurement of velocity of the water in the canal Nov. 20th 1865. Commence 85 ft below lower end of lock.

[Data Table].

The float made of 2 pieces of tin crossed, each 2 by 8 inches-supported by a cork* fastened to it, and+ another floating on the surface connected with the float by an iron wire. Water on the motor sill 5.00-float fixed at 1/2 D=2.50 It run very near the west shore much of the way. Sanderson & Hotchkiss not running.

*2 inches diam. 1 1/2 inches thick + 2 inches diam. 5/8 inch thick

[Handwritten calculations] Um=mean of the means of all vertical planes

Too small being mean of whole length of canal including wide place

Measured velocity (Nov. 23d 1865) 400 ft length of canal next above the waste weir at half the depth of the water.

[Handwritten calculations and tables] showing a mean velocity of 2.06 feet pr second.
