Dr Sir

In compliance with your request I send a table showing the amount of rain at this place which I contribute for the use of the Rock River Survey. I send also a map of the rainfall in Wisconsin made up from very numerous observations at over twenty stations. I presume this is the kind of information needed by the survey; and as it has cost me much labor & expense, I propose to charge $100 for this map. If denied I will give more in detail the observations on which it is based.

...should Col. Wanall think the Government could not pay for this map & information you will please return the map without copying it and wish without care to make a different disposition of it. Topographers generally follow the Michigan Geological report as to the elevation of Lake Michigan, which gives it at 578 feet. Its surface fluctuates about 5 feet. Printed copies of the map I can furnish at $30 per hundred as I own the plate from which it can be printed.

I have numerous items of information including the elevation of Rock River above Lake Michigan which I could furnish if denied.

Hon. I A Lapham Milwaukee

Dear Sir, Will you be kind enough to furnish me for the use of Col. Worrall of the Rock River surveying party a statement of the Yearly Rain fall for the different Years since You have kept a record. Col. Worrall wishes to use it in verifying his own estimates of the amount of water which can be depended upon for the purposes of a Canal. If you have accurate knowledge in regard to the Elevation of Lake Michigan above tide water you will also Confer a favor by stating it. Lieut ([illegible] Gen) Meade reports it is to be 576 ft, while the New York Surveys Show Lake Erie to be 567 1/2 ft making Lake Michigan only 8 1/2 ft above Erie, which would appear to be an Error. You probably have some good authority on the matter.

Respectfully Yours H Richardson

As the information asked of You is for public use I trust that I need no other Excuse for writing to You although a Stranger.

Dear Sir,

Allow me to send you my best thanks for the trouble you have taken in preparing and sending to use your geological map of Michigan. It is most valuable to use, and I would be happy to have the opportunity of being , in some manner, useful to you or to your friends in Paris. Dr. [illegible] is not in Chicago at present, but I had the map from his assistant. Believe me, Dear sir, Your respectful & devoted Felix Foucoy Dr. Lapham in Milwaukee (Wis.)
