January 6, 1916.

Mr. M.P. Onderdonk, 2310 Duane St., Los Angeles, Cal.

Dear Sir:-

This letter is an appreciation of your cordial communication of November last, expressing your approval of my action in the Hillstrom case.

It is a source of gratification that the stand which I took in this case meets with the approbation of the right-thinking people of the country. I only tried to do my plain and simple duty and trust that the action which I took will be a precedent for I am thoroughly convinced that the time has arrived in our country that those who are charged with the enforcement of the law must take a firm stand against those who seek to thwart the mandates of the courts by treats and intimidations.

Again thanking you and with kind personal regards, I am

Cordially yours, Governor.

Hon Wm. Spry. Governor of Utah.

Dear Sir. I came in position of a photo clipped from last issue of Rocky mountain news of this city. I wish to say that shortly before the shooting for which this man was tried, I was living in Ogden. One night I was standing on the corner of 25th Street and Grant avenue in the doorway of my drug store of that place a party made an effort to pick my pocket but was unsuccessful. I saw the same party later in the evening in company of another man. I saw a photo of this man shortly after. He was the partner of Hillstrom. I also can identify this as a likeness of the pickpocket which I foiled. the night in question being the night of a saloon robery that occured on washington avenue about 21st St in Ogden. Now I understand this man to be I.W.W. agitator which means nothing more than an ordinary anarchist.

I don't understand why the people of a civilized nation such as the U.S. of A. should be so willing to save his life as it is only a question of time until the I.W.W. must be dealt with as they are a class aside of anarchism are no good to themselves are others. and the sooner the law abiding citizens of our country can remove this element the better it will be for all concerned.

with best wishes I am sincerely and resp. yours

DISTRICT COURT OFFICE SECOND JUDICIAL DISTRICT STATE OF UTH

JAMES A. HOWELL, JUDGE NATHAN J. HARRIS, JUDGE JOHN C. DAVIS, DISTRICT ATTORNEY HARRY HALES, CLERK OF WEBER COUNTY W.W. EVANS, CLERK OF DAVIS COUNTY ATHENA PORTER, CLERK OF MORGAN COUNTY

OGDEN CITY, UTAH

November 19, 1915.

Hon. William Spry, Governor of the State of Utah, Salt Lake City.

Dear Governor:

After reading in the papers today your reply to President Wilson's message in regard to further consideration of the Hillstrom case, I could not refrain from assuring you that you have, I believe, most happily voiced the unanimous sentiment of the citizens of Utah in this matter.

In the face of so many recent criticizing and threatending communications, it should be gratifying to you to know that on every hand are heard comments of approval of your attitiude. And let the outside critics know that we, as citizens, concur in your courteous, but none the less forceful, expressions of resentment of the insinuation cast upon the fair name of our State, and that we feel proud of having such a leader to guide the destinies of our commonwealth.

With very best wishes, I am, Sincerley yours, Harold J. Packer Court Reporter
