SUMMARY (OF LA TRIP)

[---LA and SEA are---]

New thoughts about LA this trip:

It's very small town, as far as what would concern me. [insert] Nothing west of 405 just LA proper. [/insert]

It is not as exciting as Seattle. Biggest bars close at 2:00. No fun video bars.

Santa Monica is different from rest of the beach cities, but still to far [insert] (half-hour even on Olympic) [/insert] from LA to be livable.

LA itself is a big Albuquerque. Flat, dry, hot in summer No bodies of water to cool off.

Venice sucks even worse than I imagined.

Too much sun makes me lazy.

LA itself has awful traffic problem.

I discovered [insert: gorgeous] Hancock Park, but its so flat, and gridlike.

I haven't been too productive here, (too much transportation time) with the work I brought.

Jim Morris's is too crowded at night, when I like to work out.

Jim Morris's is friendly if you're 200 lbs! I leave it behind with much more positive feelings.

Even if I did fall in love, what would I do with lover? Beach? No! Ski? Where? Parks? Where?

FRIDAY, APRIL 13

8:45 Start in on finishing the MAC educ'l doc'n. Finish it today, then go back to Seattle to study how application really works CDP stuff too. [left margin] Ah & see next page for CONCENTRATION!! [/left margin]

11:15 I DON'T ASSOCIATE MYSELF WITH MICROSOFT AS A WHOLE. I'M SIMPLY A CONSULTANT FOR MACCOUNTANT. I'M NOT INTERESTED IN

OPERATING SYSTEMS

BUSINESS LANGUAGES

SYSTEM LANGUAGES

HARDWARE PRODUCTS

IBM APPLICATIONS (PLAN & CHART)

SO DON'T BE UPSET ABOUT MISSING COMPANY PARTY TODAY, AND DON'T TAKE SPECIAL PRIDE IN BILL BEING ON TIME'S COVER. HE'S NOT EVEN MY BOSS ANYMORE.

[left margin] put this stuff in a major memo about working for MSoft. 5/89 [/left margin]

GOTO BLUFFS

11:30 - 1:45 Sit in sun & decide weekend: Palm Springs vs San Diego. And celebrate end of book. And realize this is [insert: half] vacation. Santa Monica really is great, but so far from LA!

3 - 6:00 Finish CDP & MAC doc'n

Get cleaned up.

The next step on MAC work is to go line by line through the sample application which I can do now, but not till I get back to Seattle. It will take quite a bit of CONCENT RATION.

Over next two days I'll continue to do CDP, taking SYS A&D exam as well.

But it feel really good to be done with two weeks work on MAC doc/application.

6 - 6:30 Look over this past week; it's been pretty good, given my willingness to work just half as hard as usual, and vacation the other half. Dinners with Dick and Pat were wierd, but I'm glad Jorge could come along to entertain them, since I could not get into it... I don't know why.

6:30 - Dinner at Matoi w/ Witherspoon et al.

Advantages of meeting guys at gyms, & Not bars

During the day - No late 1 nights at bars impinging on sleep time.

Not much waste of time

See what others look like in much more detail - hairy chest, etc before approaching them

Ensure localness even to neighborhood

Much greater likelihood of meeting guys I like. Avoid searching thru trolls at bars.

Get to go to several gyms for change of pace

There are excuses to leave a person. Less sense of rejection.

Seems more like meeting people in the normal course of daily routine

No pressure to drink / do drugs

-----------------------------

Only time to meet guys at bars is Saturday Night anyway and maybe Sunday, so it's not a big loss of time out looking.

Mon August 20, 1984 It is MIDSUMMER, and I have finished coding about half of the Personal Accounting project, the half that has to do with budget definition & budgeting. (It is similar in function to the shelved Personal Finance application for Multiplan.) I started to code in the week before going to LA (with my MAC) for July 4 week.

It's been a pretty dry summer socially but not bad. Just not like the last 2 summers where I had finished projects by July 1, and then had the summer for fun. This year I started coding July 1. But lots of things have been less fun this year:

Mom in hospital for foot ulcer Bob working hard developing practive Madison Park getting face lift Uncle Jim dying May 31

But the weather has been very good this year, this summer. But every time it rains I feel like I did last winter, and wonder if I can make it through this winter.

The only part of s.Cal that I've truly loved was Orange County, Its was superd, but having lived in a city now, I think I'd be too sensitive to its lack of character, It's so new & pretty, And its only got one or 2 bars which are far apart, I was ready to leave it in Dec '81 for many reason, and I don't want to return! Even as a resort, it's not a big a deal as a resort, it's not a big a deal as russian river I've never really felt good about LA. Maybe it s crass [commercialieation], its flatness, its lack of countyside & lakes, its size, its long distance Its boring Sundays ,[ ? ] LA seems to have the opposite problem at Seattle. Lots of cute guys but nothing to do with them, Seattle has lots of stuff to do, but no one to do it with, And it's primary industry, entertainment doesn't attract me. Still true 8/85

Why go to LA now? Labor Day I need to play. I want to do a gay resort. Cloudy in Seattle. Have to before SF and can't go next few weekends because: next weekend will be boring in OC, next is Joan Rivers, next is too close to time to goto Drumms for closing.

So I finally called Mom + Dad to let then know I was here + tried calling Rik Callista. No answer.

Read Mozard some more.

7:30 Pat comes home. Get cleaned up. Goto [yellow]Garden District[/yellow] to eat. I was very quiet. Same vibes with this group. [yellow]Why do they hang on to me. Why not let me find other friends I'll enjoy.[/yellow]

10-11 Goto Numbers. Yawn.

11-12 Goto Melrose + "One." Walk. Drake's. Drakes is a porno store with a "neon crack" down the middle of the front of the building!

12-2 Backlot. Jorge, Dick + Pat go home. See [yellow]Glenn C + entourage +[/yellow] Cary Sjoblom. As usual, [yellow]no one asks me to dance,[/yellow] and it is like Brass Conn on grand scale. Go home by 2:00.
