Green letters

Dear Folks, 16.1.60 Boy this was an exciting and exhausting day. The map shows the old (from medieval times) inner city here and dotted lines where we'll go tomorrow. Hope you can make it out. The old Hollenzollern castle (upper right corner) is the Jugendherberge (youth hotel) in which we're staying! This a beautiful and really old city, with the old wall almost 100% intact, moat all around, and all the towers, ancient houses (several hundred years old). It's hard to believe it was flattened in the war, for they have rebuilt so well (almost all in the last 3-5 years) It's been biting cold but wirth it and there's much to tell. Dear Folks - Here is Titisee where we spent last night. In the splendid Black Forest, it's much like Fallen Leaf in size and shape and surrounding scenery. The town sort of sprawls comfortably all around the northern end of the lake. The little x shows the small Pension (hotel) where we found rooms. This morning we walked all the way around the lake - which is now completely frozen over! even though it was well above freezing temperature. There are still many patches of snow remaining, and the sort of transition period from winter to spring is quite beautiful.

Weinorf BEUTELSBACH i. Remstal

Dear Joe, Lil, and Carol Just a card to say a special Hi, in addition to the copies of my longer letters which Mom should be sending soon. This view is like that I have out my window, of the Rems Valley, with Beutelsbach the closest of some 20 or more villages within view. So far the whole experience has been fascinating--weekend travel, visiting families in Beutelsbach, concerts, etc. and these 4 weeks have really been jammed with activity. We leave this Saturday for a 10 day trip to Italy--6 days as a group in Rome (including a private audience with Pope John XXIII, I think) with guided tours in mornings, and afternoons and evenings free. Then on our own for 2 days in Florence and one in Milano on the way back. Then later in February I hope to go to Vienna for 4 days, and to Switzerland for 5. More about that in the letters.
