After a delicious luncheon served by the daughters and sisters
of the hostess, Elza Thomas, the 1,070 meeting of The Mutual Improvement
Association was [...]alled to order at Tanglewood Dec. 2nd. 1948 with Eliz.
Ligon presiding and Katherine Adams acting as Secretary as Mary Reading
was absent because on an ill daughter.

Next places on meeting, Jan. Esther Stabler, Feb. Ethel Thomas
and March Elsie Stabler.

There was no treasurer's report, as our Treasurer, Bertha
Crum as absent because of illness. She is in a DesMoines Hospital for
treatment.

Sentiment of the hostess, by Helen Keller." Many persons have
a wrong idea of what constitutes Happiness," etc.

Fanny Iddings read from her father's diary kept when he went to
California in '49-1849! Question ",Does anyone know where I can get more
material kile Iam using", no one did.

Rose Gilpin showed and read from an add in The Baltimore Sun
by Hess Shoe Co. to celebrate rebuilding their store on E.Balto.St.
with each pair of new shoes bought you will be given a silver dollar
for your old shoes for Friend's Service. Question. "Do others have birds

Margaret Bancroft was a welcome guest and told some anecdotes
or sayings of her help. Charles, her chauffer says "No one works hard
nowadays unless he's working in cement". and a workman told her he is
having his daughter take violin lessons so she can do something besides
sit against the wall.

Grace Thomas had a lilac in bloom, apple trees at Alloway

Mary Brooke told of a letter from Elsie Stabler who is in
California.

Isabel Wesley told of a family trip to New York when they
attended int International Horse Show.

Margaret Jones said her piece was out of date. Mr. Disharoon,
the telephone man had given her a leaflet telling why telephone rates
are so high. Question, "Where is copy of the Seal of Maryland, painted
and given The Association by Miss. Mary Davis"? It used to be at Plainfield,
Ask Helen Moore, who was absent.

Mariana Miller, a story of Edward Pierce, and told of watching
13 men put up a small piece of snow fence.

Alice Pierce, nothing.

Helen Farquhar said one advantage of reading, someone else
can always say what you want to so much better. She read from ---
Essays. Question, "Can you get pansey plants to bloom outinside"? Not often satisfactory.Eth

Ethel Thomas, an interesting story about shellac from India.
Question? "Has anyone butchered, and where can she get sausage"? no one
knew.

Ann Bussler, a typical English dinner (of the past) with
17 courses, all with a meat.

Stella Moore a letter from someone in England.
