Of the congregation, each wanting to do his best; as a result in
preparing the sermons the people receive an education, and a desire
to educate their children. This is the second infuence of the
religion that had served to unite the community.
In the early years of the community the people had one religion, but in recent years the community has been invaded by
scores of outsidd people who have brought their religion with them.
At the present time there is an Episcopal and a Baptist chirch in
the community. These new religions tend to weaken the religious
unity and bonds in the community.

11.
The founders of the community were imbued with the desire
of making good roads, and of making permanent physical improvements.
The house and barns that they built were spacious and substantial.
Many of the houses and barns in the community are over a hundred
years old. The Meeting house is a large brick building, which was
built in 1817,and is still in spendid repair. Until after 1850
it was the largest religious structure in the county.
The spirit of having good homes has presisted; at the present
time, amongst the old families espescially, there are few communities
in the whole country which have more attractive homes or homes
with more conveniences than the homes around Sandy Spring. Nearly
all the homes have spacious well kept laws, and there are few house
without running water and electric lights.

The community has always been a hot bed of agitation for
better roads, as a result they raised by popular subscription
sufficient funds to build a turnpike from the insurance office
