entrance into College, it has always been required that such Students should study along with divinity all such of the previous branches as in the judgement of the Senatus might be necessary.

6. That while it is provided by the resolution of the Trusteees of date 22 May 1840, that there shall be always ten free scholarships as the foundation of Queen's College preparing young men having a view to the Ministry, and to employment as teachers of youth, and although the Professors of Queen's College have never accepted fees from such students as had such objects decidely in view, without experience as to the restriction of their number to ten as provided by the Trustees, the Senate are nevertheless of opinion, that they act on the spirit of the aforesaid resolution of the Board only if they subject applicants for free admission to examination previous to entrance, this being in the opinion of the Senatus the only means of preventing an abuse of the Liberality of the College.

2. That the Synod appears to have reserved to itself all authority to hold out inducements to aspirants to the Ministry to expect license after any period of study shorter than that which has hiotherto been required by the laws of the Church.

3. That the Synod in granting such dispensations, has repeatedly and explicitly declared that when attendance at College should be abridged or irregular the standard of attainment hitherto deemed necessary should not be lowered.

That at the first opening of Queen's College, the Senate deemed it to be its duty except in the case of students who had exactly fulfilled all the requirements of the Synod, and with respect to whom they had received offical directions, to subject all entrants to examinations, and fix their Classes, and rank in the College, according to their respective attainments.

That it has evidently been the intention of the Synod to discontinue dispensations as to the period of attandance at College, whereon Queen's College should be in operation, and that in the case of Students who have benn permitted, [underline]speciali gratia[/underline] to enter the Divinity Hall, at their first
