tomorrow comes the regular exercises of the graduating class,
together with the inauguration of Prof Barrows, all of which
exercises I hope to attend. I like my new chum well!
he is going to make a good companion for me. He is
so still quiet and obedient I find no trouble at all
with him, and I hope he will do well while here; nothing
prevents his making many improvements; I feel under some
obligations that he should prosper, and shall encourage
and aid him all I can. Has Tommy gone Down East
yet or Lydia to New York? I hope they will both
have a pleasant time. I am sorry I forgot my shoes the
other day when I left home. I need them somewhat, though
I will try to get along until the trunk (valise) shall come. I
hope you will manage to put in a melon or two, for I miss
fruit very much. There are but very few apples here indeed +
they are poor enough. Peaches however are abundant, rather
more so than the money to buy them. I also left at home
my clothes broom which I would like to have you send up
with the other things. Give my respects to inquiring friends, and
a kiss to the smaller ones of the family and would remain
As ever your obt. Son
