enough in reciting, he will rap his pencil and call
out "quick, quick, you are too slow altogether, must go faster"
and thus he drives. But after all - there is a sort of enthusiasm
about it which I like, a real go-a-head spirit
which rouses all ones energies. In order to keep up with
him I shall have to be studious this term, and shall not
find much time for any-thing else but my regular duties
here. I feel as though I wanted to make the best
of my last year in this place, and improve my mind
in every possible manner. Not only in studying but also
in religion. My affections are cold and lifeless, and I enjoy
but little peace of mind. If possible I wish to get into the
right path and walk humbly there. I cannot write you
much of the anniversary exercises which are going on
here, for thus far they have been too deep for me to comprehend.
Last night I listened to a sermon by Dr Riddle
upon progress. It was full of life and deep thought
one hour and 3/4ths in length. This morning I went to hear
Dr Bacon of New Haven. His sermon was delivered before
the alumni of the institution; it was upon the perils
to which the ministers of Christ are subject; a real
practical, sound orthodox discourse, which if the
young ministers follow they will be prospered. At the present
time an oration is being delivered before the Porter Retorical
society of the Seminary by Prof Hiccock of N.Y.
This evening a meeting will be held in the chapel, when
the members of the senior class will deliver orations. And
