Ruling - Pencil , pen or crayon replaced the styles over
the course of the 12th C.
Pricks - in the inner as well as outer margins of early MSS
(for ruling after the bifolium was folded) almost
always indicated an origin in an Irish or
English scriptorium ; pricks in both margins also
occur generally in books during the [crossed out]early[end crossed out] late
12th or early 13th C.

pattern, the number of lines for a script , the color of ink if a
pen was used & the measurements , not not only height or width
but also between the columns & lines
