Prophetic books like Revelation exerted a great
influence on the writing of history . The idea that the history of the
world had a single end suggested to historians that only
events leading to this destination was important.
Historians influenced by Augustine's ideas shared 2
principle themes. First they concentrated on the history
of the church & its saints ; 2nd they looked for the sacred
significance of the events they wrote about.
Boethius - this model of history's cyclical nature
offered an alternative to Augustine's preoccupation -
the end of time .
"9 female worthies" - Judith
"9 male worthies" - Ceasar, Alexander the Great*
- Comestor - stressed Scripture's importance as a
record of past events
-During the Middle Ages most historians believed
that France had been founded by Francion , the
brother of the Trojan leader, Aereas who fled the
city's destruction.
Duchy of Normandy - founded 911 by Rollo.
Jean Froissart (- 1337 - after 1404) - most importatnt
French historian of the later Middle Ages.
