Except for "Eruca sylvestris" these illustrations were not used in the 1st ed. in Czech called Herbarz which had been published in Praha the year before in 1562. The text is a translation of the botanical portion of Mattioli's Commentarii without the text of Dioskorides. The woodcuts are an important advance ove the farily mediocre ones used in Mattioli's earlier works. #94 Brunet III. 1538 R. Durling #3012 Commentarii in Sex Libros Dioscordis de Medica Materia. The first ed. was published in Italian in 1544 + the 1st in Latin in 1554*, but the 1565 ed. is the 1st augmented by Mattioli's fuller notes + has always been the most valued for its completeness. The large woodcuts by G. Liberale + W. Mayenpeck are the same as those in the New Krueterbuch of 1563. (#91) -* folio de 24 ff. m. ch. 707 pp. Unlike the Italian versions this Latin ed. - enriched by sysnonms in various languages, provided with a special commentary, + accompanied by numerous illust. valuable for the readers' identification of Dioscorides simples - rendered the work accessible to scholars throughout Europe.

Copy: Breslare UB, Berlin SB., Vienne BM Bock is the 2nd of the German fathers of Botany. He had supplied Brunfels with material for the great H. V. Eicones 1530-3 and Brunfels had strongly urged him to write his own book in the vernacular. His descriptions of flowers were remarkably clear, even withoutthe benifit of illustration. He recognized the corolla, stamens + pistils as essential parts of many followers + he is the 1st botanist of the 16th C to feel the neccessity for some sort of classification.

The point of departure is still medicine. Brunfels, by turns monk, theologian, school teacher, finally turns to this art. Bock mingled the care of bodies with that of souls. Fuchs the most learned of the 3 with the recognition of plants, + so founded the art of botanical description.

Both Near Kreutter Buch (1539) + Kreuter Buch (1546) are in German; the former withoug illust. There were 12 additional German ed. + 2 Latin ed (Strassbourg) 1552 + 1553. Nissen - The epoch making feature in Bock, however, is his resolute emancipation from the tutelage of the "Ancient Masters" in favour of description based on personal or at least contemporary observation + experience. Nissen - about 1/4 of the figures are more or less faithfully copied from Weiditz, the rest mostly in the manner of Mayer + Fullmauer, the illustrations of Fuch's herbal. On the other hand, the genres in the 3rd book have been newly designed by Kandel.
