the bliss of Heaven. It is impossible because heaven is a holy place, because God himself and all the glorified spirits are holy, because the employments of Heaven are holy &c.

------------

During one of the prayers, somewhat to my surprise Uncle Jonathan came walking in, in his dressing-gown and soiled vest, escorted by Patrick, and evidently having come without the knowledge of Henry and Emmie, who were at home. An inquiry it seems that he told Patrick to lead him there, for he always went to chruch. It attracted some attention, and disturbed Aunt somewhat. After meeting we had dinner, and then Henry, Emmie and I went to walk. Emmie and I attended monthly concert i nthe vestry this evening. Uncle has been having a very wild spell, talking fast and crossly to aunt, and appearing to be almost crazy - I hold he will be better in the morning

Monday, June 7. A very pleasant and happy day, spent quietly at home. Soon after breakfast Emmie and I went up through the grove to Mr Potter's, as she wished him to come down this evening and fire at a mark with Henry. While she made her call I stayed in the grove and read, Neptune keeping me company, then we came home and worked, Emmie on her blue silk dress, I on my new lawn bonnet, at which I continued through

the day, with the exception of a short call at the [?], where I made purchases to amount of five cents (which, by the way, is the first of my money that I have found occasion to spend since I have been here.) Henry came home from the store earlier than usual, so we had tea at six oclock, then we adjourned to the barn, to see the mark fired at, which was done to perfection, Henry and Mr Potter each breaking a bottle. After the shooting was over, came a long ride, Henry on horse-back, Mr and Mrs Potter, Emmie and I in the buggy. - The New York question is settled. I am to go tomorrow afternoon with George Osgood and Aunt Hadlock. I hardly know whether to be most pleased or alarmed. It will certainly be rather an alarming thing to present myself as a niece and cousin to persons that I dont know, and that dont know me, but I should like to know them, and I should very much like to see New York, so I believe that on the whole I am very much pleased. Tomorrow at this time I shall probably be far out at sea. Henry has just sent me five more dollars to put in my purse. What a thoughtful, good brother he is! Uncle has been better today than we expected he would be. This morning I answered the letter that I received Saturday from the girls, and wrote a short one to Sarah Cobb.

New York, Thursday, June 10. Here I am in New York, at my dear, good Aunt Mary's house. I fancy that this book will contain rather a greater variety than my last one did. Last Tuesday morning came, not so bright and pleasant as we could have wished, but with a little drizzling rain, however a little rain would not prevent our going to New York, so I set to work, first to finish my new lawn bonnet, then to pack those of my clothes that were not soiled into my trunk, which was to be sent by express to the depot in Boston. About half past eleven Prince was put into the chaise, and Emmie and I set out for Roxbury. Notwithstanding the rain we had a fine ride, and arrived at Aunt Osgoods in pretty good season. Aunt Woodman was there, and Aunt Hadlock so with Abbie and Sarah, Aunt Osgood, Willie and [Johngie?], Emmie and I, we had a fine time, and all took dinner together. After dinner came the great rush of fixing us off. Abbie must make Aunt Hadlock a cap, Aunt Woodman must buy her another, while Aunt Osgood fixed her dress, and Emmie dressed her hair, and we all talked at one and the same time, making quite a scene of confusion. At last all was in a state of readiness, Sarah made some tea, of which we partook, and a little after four, escorted by Abbie, we set out for the depot, leaving Emmie and Prince to convey Aunt Woodman home. First we walked a

little ways, then took an omnibus and rode into Boston then alighted and walked down Pleasant Street to the depot. There we ascended to the lady's room and looked out to see when our dear cousin and gallant George should make his appearance, but after watching a long time, and almost concluding that he was not coming, Abbie went down to see, and found that he was waiting for us - Then all that remained for us to do, was to get into the cars and be off, which we spedily did. The rain which had for a time ceased, now came on again, and through the whole evening pattered briskly against the windows of the car. The scenery in some places was beautiful. Providence through which we passed is a beautiful place, and cousin George is a fine cousin.

At a little before nine we reached Stonington, where we exchanged the cars for the Steamer Commodore, one of the finest boats imaginable, and beautifully furnished in every part. After going into the cabin to secure our births George insisted upon our going to the supper table. This I felt no desire to do, but as he would have it so, there was no help for it, and aunt said it was worth going to the table to see it. It was beautifully set out, ornamented with flowers, and there we tasted the first strawberries of the season. Supper over, and having taken a walk up through the saloon, bed
