4 SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

Lettuce. One ounce will sow 120 feet of drill. Sow in hot bed in March and in open ground as early as it can be worked, thinly in drills one foot apart. For a succession sow every three weeks during the season. The soil should be rich and mellow. Thin out plants as they grow. ICEBERG.-The large curly leaves that cover the outside of the solid heads are of a bright, light green, with a very slight reddish tinge at the edges. The center is thoroughly blanched. Whether in the early spring or the hottest days of summer, the quality is simply perfect. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 40c. BLACK SEEDED SIMPSON.-Nearly double the size of the ordinary Curled Simpson. Stands the summer well without becoming tough or turning to seed quickly. Is by far the most popular variety for greenhouse forcing, making large, handsome heads in a very short time. GRAND RAPIDS.-A forcing variety of superior quality and beautiful appearance, strong grower, free from rot, and keeps crisp and tender without wilting when exposed for sale, longer than any other forcing lettuce. NEW CONTINUITY.-In this grand new variety we have one of the most desirable sorts now on the market. The outside leaves are a very dark brown color tinged with purple, while the inside of the head is fine creamy white, tender, crisp and well-flavored. RELISH.-It is one of those rich, buttery flavored sorts which after one becomes accustomed to, they always prefer to the crisp leaved varieties. It is the blanched, yellow center of the head that is eaten with olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. A desirable sort for family use and market gardeners, either for forcing or growing in the open ground. Early and hardy. Pkt. 5c, oz. 20c, 1/4 lb. 60c. EARLY CURLED SIMPSON.-An improved variety with large, loose heads; excellent flavor. Pkt. 5c. oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. CALIFORNIA CREAM BUTTER.-A variety with round, solid heads. DENVER MARKET.- An early variety of Head Lettuce, either for forcing or open ground. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. 85c. IMPROVED HANSON.- For general use no variety can surpass our improved, carefully selected strain of Hanson Lettuce. Resists summer heat exceptionally well. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb 30c, lb. $1.00. PRIZEHEAD.- Very tender leaves. Heads large and of good flavor. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. 85c. MIXED VARIETIES.- Seed of about 20 early, medium and late sorts mixed together, thus giving lettuce for the table during the entire season and giving an opportunity to examine all the leading varieties with but little expense. Musk Melon. One ounce will plant about 80 hills; two pounds to the acre. The soil best adapted to the culture of melons is a warm, rich, sandy loam. Plant in hills five or six feet apart each way, ten or twelve seeds in a hill. When they begin to vine thin out leaving only four of the most thrifty. ROCKY FORD.-This new variety is in great demand by the high class hotels and restaurants. The flesh is thick, of a light green color and a fine juicy, luscious flavor. It is very early and the melons are of just the right size for table use, slightly oval in shape. It is wonderfully productive. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c lb. $1.00. OSAGE GEM.-Outside like Netted Gem, inside like Osage; it pleases the eye on sight and confirms that impression by its color and exquisite flavor when cut. This new hybrid of Osage and Netted Gem much resembles Paul Rose in size and inside salmon flesh, but in outside skin and netting it is exactly like the Oval Netted Gem with the best style of netting. Pkt. 10c, oz. 20c, 1/4 lb. 60c. WINTER PINEAPPLE or SANTA CLAUS.-This is distinct from any other variety. The skin, instead of being netted, is deeply corrugated, and when ripe of a rich yellow intermingled with green. The flesh is light green, unusually spicy, melting and delicious, having a rich, aromatic pineapple flavor. As it does not ripen on the vines, it should be picked before hard frost and kept in a cool, dry cellar, where it will keep for months; a few days before wanted for use it should be placed in a warm room to ripen. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15, 1/4 lb. 50c, lb. $1.50. EMERALD GEM.-The finest in flavor of all varieties of musk melon. It is also the earliest to ripen; rather small and flattened at both ends. CHAMPION MARKET.-A superb variety. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 50c, lb. $1.60. PRINCESS or PERFECTION.-The flesh is of a rich salmon color and they ripen early. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 45c, lb. $1.25. IMPROVED GREEN NUTMEG.-A greatly improved strain of the old Green Nutmeg. Of fair size, flesh light green and very rich in flavor. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 50c, lb. $1.60. NETTED GEM.-An excellent small melon and very popular. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 80c. IMPROVED EARLY HACKENSACK.-Large size, rich flavor. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 35c, lb. $1.20. OSAGE.-One of the best melons on the market for family use. The skin is thin, of dark green color and slightly netted. The flesh is salmon color. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 50c, lb. $1.75. MIXED MUSK MELONS.-All of the above and a few other kinds, the seed mixed together. Will produce melons throughout the entire melon season. Per pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 35c, lb. $1.20.

Citron Melon. Very nice for preserving and they are largely used for this purpose. APPLE PIE.-Best flavored of all. The melons keep fresh all winter, so that they can be used at any time. Pkt. 10c. COLORADO PRESERVING.-Pkt. 5c, oz. 15, 1/4 lb. 40c, lb. $1.25. RED SEEDED CITRON.-Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 40c, lb. $1.25.

Water Melon. One ounce is required for forty hills; three pounds will plant an acre. A light, sandy soil with good exposure to the sun is the best for water melons. It should be prepared deep and receive shallow cultivation. Plant in hills eight to ten feet apart each way. Plant eight to ten seeds in a hill, and when danger of insects is past, leave three strong plants. IMPROVED TRIUMPH-(The largest of all melons.)-Mr. Girardeau, the originator of several of the finest melons on the market, has brought out this grand new sort and to prove his claim of largest size, he offered prizes aggregating $210.00 and the first prize was won with a melon weighing 149 3/4 lbs. It is solid, of dark green color, matures fairly early and is of excellent quality. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. 90c. PEERLESS or ICE CREAM.- White seeded. Of unquestionable quality; very early. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 35c, lb. $1.75. BLUE GEM or ICEBERG.-Is of dark, bluish green color, bright red flesh and black seeds. Grows to large size and is a good shipper. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. 90c. PHINNEY'S EARLY. - Medium size and quite productive. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. $1.00. GYPSY or GEORGIA RATTLESNAKE.-A superior or early market variety; large, oblong, the skin green, mottled and striped. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. DIXIE.-It is early, has a remarkably thin, tough rind, and will keep and ship well. The flesh is bright scarlet and of fine quality. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 85c. MONTE CRISTO.- (Kleckley's Sweets.) The skin is dark green, faintly striped, flesh bright red. Pkt. 5c, oz. 15c, 1/4 lb. 40c, lb. $1.20. KOLB'S GEM.-The color is a dark green with lighter narrow stripes. Very thin and tough rind; flesh bright red and of good flavor. Our seed is choice. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 20, lb. 50c. McIVER'S WONDERFUL SUGAR.-It is a large melon, averaging 35 lbs. each. They are long, rind thin and tough, flesh a delicate red, tender and juicy. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 30c, lb. $1.00. Of medium size, very productive, continuing to bear throughout the season. Flesh of bright red color of granulated, sparkling appearance. In flavor it is lusciously sweet and refreshing. The soil for onions should be a rich loam thoroughly enriched with well rotted manure and pulverized before sowing the seed. It should be as free from weeds and grass as possible. [image] EARLY SCARLET GLOBE.

Radish. One ounce will sow 100 feet of drill. Eight to ten pounds will sow one acre in drills. Radish seed should be sown in light, rich soil as early as the ground can be worked, and for a succession, at intervals of two weeks until midsummer. Sow in drills one foot apart and thin to two or three inches apart as soon as the rough leaves appear. EARLY SCARLET GLOBE.-A most excellent early radish for garden culture. It forms small top and will stand a great amount of heat without becoming pithy. Its fine shape is well illustrated in the accompanying engraving. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. ROSY GEM.-Their shape is perfectly globular, with rich, deep, scarlet top, blending into pure white at the bottom. Tender, crisp, delicious. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. FRENCH BBEAKFAST.-Olive shaped, small top of quick growth, crisp and tender, of beautiful scarlet color, except near the tip which is a pure white. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 60c. NEW ICICLE.- A splendid new long variety of almost transparent whiteness, crisp, brittle and of best flavor. It vies in earliness with the earliest forcing sorts. EARLY SCARLET TURNIP.-A small, round red, turnip-shaped radish, with a small top and very quick growth. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 20c, lb. 50c. MODEL WHITE BOX.-It is of most handsome shape, very early and has but few leaves, and one-third more radishes can be grown in the same space than with most other sorts. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 25c, lb. 75c. ALL SEASONS or CELESTIAL.-Introduced by us in 1890 and has proved of great value as a summer and fall sort, keeping also quite well for winter use. EARLY LONG SCARLET SHORT TOP.- An old standard variety of quick growth, with long, slender roots. Radishes are ready for market about twenty-five or thirty days after planting seed. Flesh crisp and mild. Pkt. 5c, oz. 10c, 1/4 lb. 20c, lb. 60c. IOWA SEED CO.'S RADISH MIXTURE.-A superb mixture of all kinds of radishes, early, medium, fall, winter, Chinese, etc. Sow a row of it. Squash. One ounce early varieties will plant about 40 hills; one ounce late varieties will plant about twenty hills, 3 to 4 pounds to the acre.
