Saturday, January 20, 1923

A rainy evening. Ben and Jim finished their plant bed today at twelve o'clock. There is sickness at most every home around here at this time. Nellie and I got dinner. Nellie washed dishes. Henry went to Renan for soda for the plant beds. Nellie made Evyline an apron to day. Lelia Ward brought the clothes home this evening. I went to sleep and marked my book. Letia Ward brought the clothes home this evening.

Tuesday, January 30, 1923

A cloudy day. Ben and Jim hauled wood. Said they had hauled 42 two-horse loads here this winter. Nellie and I got dinner. The children went to school. All of the sick that we heard from was doing well as could be expected. Nellie had a letter from Evylin. She was not well. Wants Nell to come there as soon as she can. Lelia Ward come and got the clothes to iron. I commenced me a rug by ripping up an old garment. Hope I can work some. Mabel never went to sleep until after 8 oclock. Had to make [nothing written further]

Saturday, March 24, 1923

A good day. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Then Ben and Nellie and I went to Straitstone. We bought some things. We come home and I got dinner. Oscar and Effie and Hellen and Hilda and Miss Finch come for some flowers. They would not stay for dinner. After dinner Ben and I went to Gretna. Come home by Johns Saw Tenier a few minutes then went to Curries. Found them all well. Got a lot of turnip greens. Got home o.k. Nellie had made her a dress and killed a chicken. Dressed it. Lelia Ward churned while I was gone. Henry is sick tonight.

Friday, April 6, 1923

A good day. Ben went to Rob Hubbands to help cover a house. Jim hauled sand a part of the day. Then went to the store. He bougt some matches. Lelia Ward washed some for me today and ironed and brought the clothes home. Nellis has sewed some today and helped attend to the children. Franklin and Mabel is both sick. I am troubled a bout them. Guess they have got measles and can't brake out. I see lots of trouble. There is so much that should be done that I cant do.

Friday, April 20, 1923

A good day. The men hauled manure and drilled it in the land for tobacco. Jim cleaned the stalls. The children that go school went. Mabel staid out doors nearly all day. I have dodged about most of the day. Lelia Ward come this morning. She got a hen for her washing. Had postal from Carrie. She said that all was sick at her house except the baby. I do hope they may soon get well. Today has bin warm. Mabel has gone to bed.

Thursday, April 26, 1923

A good day. Jim went to mill. He got back by 11 oclock. He work on the garden all evening manureing and planting. Ben plowed all morning. This evening John Ward and Ben went to the island for guano. They were late getting home. I have bin busy all day. Fixed Ednas sweater sleeves. Made them short enough. Mabel has bin good today. Played out doors most of the day. I have not seen any body to day except Lelia Ward. Edna helped milk tonight. We had or first mess of plant bed salit today.

Monday, April 30, 1923

A good day. Ben went to the mill. Did not get any brand. Jim worked on the fence. John Ward went fishing. Lelia Ward come and done some sweeping. I put away some quilts this morning and churned and got dinner. This evening I got Mabel to sleep. Johnson Reynols come a few minutes this morning. Kate come a little while. She wanted cymbling seed. The children went to school. Ben finished Henrys clown suit this evening. I killed a hen this evening. Mabel got a letter from Evelyntoday. Whe was glad to [pen ran off page?].

Monday, May 7, 1923

A good day. Jim hauled olde rails to the wood pile for stove wood. Henry plowed. Hattie Gilbert washed here. Lelia Ward come here a little while. She brought all of her children with her. Good looking little darkeys. I have bin busy most of the day. The children and I walked over to the barns looking for wilde straw berrie blooms. Found a nice little patch.

Saturday, May 12, 1923

A windy day. We need rain bad. The men have not done much today. I have not done any thing to count any thing. Lelia Ward come this morning and washed up the dishes for me. Mrs. Booker come this evening to get a setting of eggs for Mrs. Dave Booker[?]. Ben and Henry are fixing to go to Strait Stone to the Lodge. Jim planted some tomatoe plants. The weather is so colde and the land so dry that nothing cant grow. The children is worrying me. They won't go to sleep.

Monday, May 14, 1923

A good day. The men worked on their tobacco land most of the day. Oh how I wist we could have rain. I have felt bad all day. Guess walking up to Renan had something to do with my bad feelings. I have bin busy all day. Cleaned up the chickens coop. I gathered a few strawberries today. The first that has ripened this spring. Lelia Ward sent me some salit for dinner. I fried some pies this morning. Ben is very much comnplaining tonight. He has a very bad colde. Jim had a letter from Nellie today.

Monday, May 21, 1923

A good day. Ben and Jim and all that could drop or plant tobacco went to the field. Mabel staid out all day for her first time. She had a good time playing. Lelia Ward and her children was at the field this evening. I churned and got dinner. Fried some nice meat and had Irish potatoes. Stewed some apples and picked some strawberries. Baked corn and wheat bread. Have not seen any one to day to hear any news. I planted a few beet plants in the garden. Found one of my hens dead this morning. The first poppy bloomed today. It is beautiful.

Thursday, May 31, 1923

A cloudy day. No rain. It is needed so bad. They finished plowing over the corn. It is so dry that they hardly know what to do. Ben worked on his flowers some. Jim replanted the water mellons. I done nothing that you can see. I made Edna an under waist. I wanted to go to Gretna so bad but could not get off. I need needles and thread and buttons. Lelia Ward washed for us today and ironed and sent the clothes home. She is a good hand.

Saturday, June 16, 1923

A good day. Ben finished cutting wheat this morning. This evening they fixed some tobacco land. Jim plowed some sweet potatoes. I wanted to go to the river but did not go. I mended overalls yesterday and to day. Lelia Ward sent the clothes home done up nice. I am glad of that much help. We had new Irish potatoes and last years butter beans and apple pies. I killed two chickens for dinner tomorrow. I made a mess of my book. Nothing but carelessness. I am ashamed of it but cant help it now.

A good day. The wind has blowed most all day. The boys mowed some and hauled up some hay. The Wooding land was solde today. Jim and Ben did not go to the sale. Mr. [?] Carter bought home place. The children has had a good time playing. I made Mabel a little suit to play in the water with. I think it look good on her. Lelia Ward sent the clothes home by John. They are o.k. Sam [C?llans] was here today trying to find plants. Every thing is drying up.

A clear day. No rain in sight yet. Henry went to George Blains to help thrash wheat. Jim and Ben plowed tobacco. Ben and the children went to Strait Stone this evening. I picked a few black berries this evening. Want to preserve them in the morning if I can. Lelia Ward come here this evening for a hen. Said she had to fix a basket for a pick nick tomorrow. I sent 7 doz eggs to the store to day. They paid 25 cts per doz. Edna bought two bowls to day. I am pleased with them. Ben hates to take us any where so bad that he spoils all the pleasure.

A good day. Very Warm. No rain yet to do any good. A few drops to day. All of the men plowed this morning. This evening Ben and Henry went to Altavista. Ben had his teeth worked on. Henry had one pulled. I went and picked some black berries. Mrs Booker come while I was gone. She did not stay long. Lelia Ward come to help me milk. The cow would let her milk her ok. There is lightning in sight to night. Do hope it will rain soon. I made nine glasses of jellie this morning.

A rainy morning. We have had a good rain. All we need now. Hope it may not be so dry any more this summer. We all staid at home until after twelve. Henry went to Johnson Reynols this evening. Said he would go to Strait Stone tonight. Lelia Ward come this morning. She helped me clean up a while. There was seven chickens in the garden that come near getting drowed. All come to except one. All of them would of died soon if Jim had not found them. There has bin a lot of passing here today.

A good day. Ben helped Mr. Booker work on his barn. The rest of them suckered tobacco. Isla Blair come over here a few minutes this morning. I was glad to see her. Heard today that Buck Mills was hurt yesterday by a car running over him. I hope he may soon be out a gain. Ray Booker come to see Franklin this evening. Mabel and Franklin has bad colds. Have not heard form Edna yet. Nellie heard from Evelyn today. Lelia Ward washed for us today. Nellie gathered some grapes to make jellie today.

Friday, August 17, 1923

A cloudy day and some rain. Not enough to stop work. The men suckered tobacco. Jimm went to Strait Stone to get the horses shod and flue joints. Got dinner. Nellie caned some tomatoes and gathered some grapes. We staid at home and I have no news. Lelia Ward went to a lodge meeting. Mabel got a letter from Edna to day. I got one from Kitty Reynols. I am glad to hear from any of them. I want to go for Edna tomorrow but the men is so busy I am afraid they wont go. Fraklin and Mabel has bad colds.

Thursday, September 13, 1923

A beautiful day. I come home this morning and found the men cutting tobacco. Nellie was getting dinner. I did not do any thing much a bout dinner. This evening I wormed tobacco. Lelia Ward helped me. The worms is trying to eat up the late tobacco. Evylin helped unload some tobacco this evening for the first time in her life I guess. Lelia Ward washed for me today. I went to Mr Bookers and got some snaps for tomorrows dinner. Mr Layne was hunting his hog. Franklin tried to help him drive it home.

Monday, October 1, 1923

A good day. Jim and John Ward cut corn. Ben has bin at Lees all day. The children went to school. Evylin washed a big washing for them. Nellie kept the baby. I got dinner. Lelia Ward come this morning and got a chicken. She said she wanted it for their dinner. Heard today that Evylin Hutcherson is sick. Jo Edmons is bad off yet from getting hurt. I hope that they may get well soon. Today is Mabels birth day. She is four years old. I am writing by the light of four little wax candles that I made for her. She is very well except a sore ear.

A good day. Cool and clear. Ben and John plowed. Jim set up corn until he finished. This evening Ben carried Mabel and I to White Falls. I fished. Did not catch any thing worth haveing. They would not bite much. Nellie ironed for her self and Evylin. I got dinner. Mrs Car churned. The children went to school. Lelia Ward went to Level Run today. John brought the clothes home this morning.

A good day. There was no one at home this morning of Bens family. Henry spent the night with Lawson Emerson. Ben and the other children was at Rob Hubbands. I got breakfast and dinner. Lelia Ward come and helped some this morning. Lawson Emerson was here for dinner. Ben and the children come a bout sundown. Herny went to preaching tonight. I am disapointed that Carrie and family did not come. Hope there is not any thing the matter.

A good day. Ben and John Ward worked sewing wheat. Jim graded tobacco all day. They are all tying tonight. The children went to school.

Some one worked the road near the school house today. Ben did not help. I am sorry that he could not help. Henry has gone to church tonight. I washed a few things today. Nellie washed some for the baby. Three of our children has bad colds. Tonight I feel bad. Think I am taking colde. Lelia Ward come today.

A good day. The children went to school. Jo Edmons[?] brought Edna and Franklin home on his car. Kate Harvey is here tonight. I am glad that she come. The men folks has worked on their tobacco all day and til bed time tonight. Lelia Ward brought me a piece of beef today. We certainly did enjoy it. I made Mabel an apron today. She has bin as sweet as could [sic] most of the time today. She has a very bad colde. Henry brought a rooster from Kates last evening. I am glad of him.

A beautiful day. Warm for December. We have worked on the cleaning up after hog killing. Lelia ward and I cut up the lard and sausage. I dried up the lard. Ben and Jim ground the sausage. I seasoned it. Ben made little bags and Edna and Ben filled the sacks. Ben washed off the table and washed the dished[?]. Henry and Franklin went to the mill at Cedar Forest. Got some corn meal. John Ward washed the chidlins and cleaned the faces and feet and that was a great help. Ben helped me get supper. I was glad.
