at Sea

Wednesday July 6th. 1859.

Ship barque & brig in sight last night head wind continued

Thursday July 7th. 1859.

Fine day but wind ahead & light. 3 vessels in sight one bark to leeward one to windward & a ship. a shoal of porpoises going north. expect the head wind to continue till change of the moon. made little more than 30 miles since yesterday Capt. gave P & I camp stoves apeice Therm 72.

Friday July 8th. 1859.

Cabin all day. vessels seen yesterday still laying about.

Saturday July 9th. 1859.

Have had a Curtain over Cabin door last & the night before. Calm Continues two or three false alarms of wind

a pilot up Channel? & were any passengers going ashore? Asked whether land in sight was Start Point? Yes! they asked a bo. grog. throw it overboard. Capt. said Come alongside & I will give you some beef. Could not come up running before the wind. blowing fresh asked French brig & Barque this mg. for Long. dave it on blk. board. Going along to day with a splendid breeze "Ivanhoe" passing all she came across. Barque in sight lost main top gallant mast. everyone on bd. in high spirits expect to get a pilot at Dungeness tomorrow. (P & I still out) quantities of weed floating past water dark green. Fine clear day. Therm: 67°. Bar. low. passed the Lizard Start Portland bill. 1 ocl no land in sight. 6 ocl abreast of Portland Bill 10 miles distant Can see the houses on the point & 2 lighthouses distinctly

English Channel

hove the ship too about 10. Mr. & Mrs. Payne & Peterson went ashore (Mr. & Mrs.P without saying good bye) asked the boatmen to report us & Peterson had a telegraph message. Went on to Dungeness. A great number of Ships at Anchor outward bound head wind for them could not proceed out abreast of Dungeness about 2 ocl P.M. pilot Cutter came off two pilots in small boat with hats on well ducked. still beating all ships we come [a]cross beat Steamer which we have engaged for £40- to take us up the river 4 ocl in the downs. rounded the south foreland passes Dover saw the Coast of France Could see the people walking ashore at Dover & the Bating Machines with glass Dover Castle Breakwater &ce. 5.30
