DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1797,

1797,
October,
29, Sunday, white frost, very smoky, no clouds. J.Taylor sent to let me know Ed-
mund Taylor & wife was at his house and invite me to dinner- I went. C.Tayor
& family aand Reuban Taylor dined there. [Nephew of diarist, son of Edmund-WKA]

30, Ice-cold and windy- fair. began to gather corn in orchard field. jane Gilden
brought 5 pair negroes' stockings- She had 4 lb wool & spun & knit them at 4/-
p/r pair. I paid her the balance due 9/6- except 1/2 bar'l corn, or 6/-, which
I still owe her.
31, Sharp frost and ice. Fair and changed milder. had 31 hogs put into the road xxx
field to fatten. the Boar was cut and one of them Began to feed there. Had a
new Sill put into the old corn house. C.Taylor came by, to ask if I could let
him have some butter- I had none to part from. T.Doolin sent Suke & got a
shoulder bacon 9 3/4lb. Gathered balance Corn in Orchard field.

November,
1, Wednesday, Ice, very smoky- fair and warm. I sent Frank( onfoot ) to Mr.Tripletts
where I also rode. Frank brought home the Dishes & hats I purchased the 27th
ulto. & a blanket. I purchased sundry articles-Having first returned 4 yds
Cloth I bought the 27th Ulto. I brought home some articles, left 3 Blankets-
Cloth for Negroes- Sack Salt- & 25 lbs bro. Sugar to be snet by Waggon to Mr
Shepherd's or to F.Taylor's- I find a mistake in the note of Particulars, 1 yd
fearnought, or 4 for 3 yds at 3/8 1/8 & 5/- in p/s Cotton, overcharged. Daniel
Triplett agreed to gove me 7/6 p/r bushel for my crop of Wheat-to be paid for
1st September next, and to let me have 100 Bushels bran at [?] p/r bushel.
Finished Shocking the Corn from Orchard field & put 6 Hnds into Old Corn house
Sent to James McNeils Shop & got a pair Shoes of Sorrilmare. This is the be-
ginning article of work there.
2, Fair, warm and smoky. Finished Measuring the Corn made in Orchard field. __Hogs-
heads and ____Hampers put in Corn house. Macon Biggers & wire went to Louisa.
The sale of his mother's Estate to be to-morrow &c. I was unwell- In evening
walked to J.Taylor's- He with Maj'r Moore,John Moore, [Wm.Moore?] jr & O.Bell, had
been to Madison's Mill,& get there after sunset- E.Taylor's wife, Sally & Bet-
sy Taylor, Sally & Juny Burnley, came from C.Taylor's. I came away as soon after
dark. Davy began to make shoes.
3, Continues warm, fair and smoky. I carried Cloth and Trimmings to T. Doolin to have
a Coat made. Wqlked on to Court house, went and saw Mr. Shepherd, who is very ill
but rather better than he has been. Received a letter from*F.S.Taylor, pd 40
cts postage, giving account of his marriage &c. Returned to T.Doclins & left my
Coat, for him to measure the new one by it. Got back to dinner. Began Gathering
Mountain field of Corn. Took a [?] Corn out of New & put into old house (19th)

5, 1797, Ann, daughter of Maj. William Lindsay, U.S.A.-PFT]
4, Fair early in morn. Began to rain before noon.light showers-plentiful rain at
night-Very warm. I sent 2 bags Corn to Dade's Mill and got meal. I have a bad
cold in my head-Took Castor oil.
5, [Sunday], Cloudy , warm, windy and a good rain, cleared cool in evening. I did not
go from home. J. Taylor walked here after the rain and staid about 2 hours.
6, Ice. Flying clouds, cold & windy. Tho's Doolin sent negro woman & got a Shoulder ba-
con 9 1/4 lb. I staid at home.
7, Hard Frost, cold for the season. I had a chilliness and more unwell than usual.
little Peter ad Sary unwell & took each a dose of Salts.
