4, [226] DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1794, 1794, February, 8, Fine moderate weather- G.C.Taylor called here after breakfast, I told him he might get the money I owed him when ever her calls on me for it. Reuben Taylor, G.C.Taylor & John Langham came here from Court house, after I had dined, they dined here & returned to Court house. Lewis Overton who bo't the Whipsaw came for it- I offered him 9/- which he took for it. George brought a Side Soal Leather from W.Shepherd's w'ch except Mr Hyde sent there, weight 15 lb. I desired only 10 lb to be sent. I paid Phil a pint whiskey for mending my Boots. 9, Cloudy night- a little rain before day, then snowed fast a little time, soft rain afterwards all day. I staid at home. ---[SUNDAY]--- 10, Foggy morning, warm and thaw, cleared about noon. Great part of snow melted. Heard Frogs cry in the evening. Hung the Beef. 11, Continues warm and thaw- very little frost this morning- a little hazy. I took 20 Grains Ipecac & 20 Gr's Jallap and staid at home. Heard Frogs-yesterday & to day. Had the floor scowered. 12, Rainy all day till in the night, not cold. One of my largest Shoats missing & I expect is killed, they had been at Mr Bell's & Mrs Burnley's- 13, Cleared before day- fine weather, earth very wet. G.C.Taylor came here. I paid him £15.-being the balance of £17. for the hire of negroes last year. I rode with him to Court house- and J.Taylor's, where we dined- C.Taylor, James Bell & Tho's Barbour' jr's wife &c were there. M.Biggers went to Mr.T.Bell's to search for the Hog missed. but cou'd not find it. 14, Cloudy cool morning, a few spits of snow. Cleared about sunset when the moon arose almost totally Eclipsed- G.C.Taylor came here to dinner. I let him have a Half Joe on acco't of my father's estate (which he said C.Taylor would return if he shou'd receive money for him) - Uncle Taylor, Mr T.Bell, James Bell, John Moore, C.P.Howard, J.Taylor, J.Taylor jr, C.Taylor & ___ Green (a youth come to live with J.Taylor) dined here. After dinner G.C.Taylor set out (with his boy Jonathan) on his way to Montgomery County intending to go to Col Burnley's this evening. 15, Cloudy morning, clear noon & cloudy evening. I rode to Mr.Wm Banks's. Rec'd payment for the bal'ce of his bond to Ben Taylor £8.6.0. & 1/6 interest and gave him the bond. I came home to dinner. 16, [SUNDAY] Cold with some clouds. I went to J.Taylor's, T.Barbour & family- Reu Taylor, Gab'l Barbour, Lewis Throckmorton, Sally & Betsy Taylor, Wm.Daniel & Ben Gaines dined there, B.Daines gave me letters &c from F.S.Taylor & R'd Taylor jr of Norfolk. 17, Great frost, cold windy & clear- I was unwell, took Castor oil and kept at home. 18, White frost, fine moerate day- hazy evening. I walked to the Overseer's; the negroes heaping stones. Jim breaking hemp and Davy mauling- Mrs Stewart at Macon Biggers' I ret'd home to dinner. John Langham came here in the evening, brought the keys of Wm Taylor's Desk & Book-case- I gave him sundry kinds of Garden seeds- 19, Cloudy morning- Rainy warm evening. Began to plow with one plow. 20, Cloudy & warm without rain, the last of the Snow disappeared to day. Sent Frank & Jack (on the young mares) to Mr.W.Carties, they brought me 2 large young Cherry trees, which are supposed to be Greyhearts. Lightning to Northeast at night. 21, The air changed to cold last night, Frost this morning, windy cold & clear- Planted in the yard the two Cherry trees I got from Wm. Carties. 22, Sharp frost- Pleasant day. I rode to Mr.Shepherd's, got copy of my account for Smith's work to this time £6.0.1. I returned to dinner. 23, [SUNDAY] Turned cloudy last night & before day hailed with rain & Snow, about 2 inches deep when it ceased before noon. motley evening & thawing. I went to J.Taylor's to dinner. -T. Barbour & family- Roger Bell's wife & their own family there. The Guinea Sow Pigged, 5 pigs to day.
