Kenneth Morgan was born at Auckland on the 7th August, 1922. He obtained his secondary education at Mt. Albert Grammar School, afterwards continuing night classes at Seddon Memorial Technical College. He was interested in rugby. After leaving school he was employed in the radio trade and at the time of applying for enlistment in aircrew, on the 14th November 1940, was employed by A. & T. Burt Ltd. at Auckland.

Pilot Officer Morgan was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 28th December 1941 and embarked for Canada on the 17th March, 1942 under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

P/O Morgan arrived in Canada on the 12th April, 1942, and on the 26th of the month was posted to No. 2 Wireless School, Calgary, Alberta, where he trained on Norseman and Beaufort aircraft. On the 7th November he proceeded to No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School, where on the 7th December he was awarded the wireless operator air gunner's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 7th June 1943, and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer on the 15th April 1944. Meanwhile he proceeded on the 29th December 1942, to No. 36 Operational Training Unit at Greenwood, Nova Scotia, where he crewed up and trained on Hudson aircraft. On the 3rd April he was posted to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

P/O Morgan arrived at No. 11 Personnel Despatch and Receiving Centre, Brighton on the 18th April 1943 and late in May proceeded to No. 11 Radio School, Hooton Park, Cheshire, for a radio course before posting on the 13th July to No. 1 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit, Thornaby, Yorkshire, where he completed his training as wireless operator air gunner of Hudson aircraft.
