20th June 1943 he was posted to No. 78 Squadron, Holme Moor, Yorkshire.

On his first operational flight with this squadron, undertaken as pilot of a Halifax bomber on the night of the 24/25th June 1942 against the target of Wuppertal, the aircraft failed to return to its base and all the crew includign Flight Sergeant Morrison (redacted was) were classified as missing. Later, information was received from a German source through the International Red Cross that Flight Sergeant Morrison lost his life and he was, in consequence, reclassified as missing believed killed in action. Due time having elapsed his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 25th June 1943 as the result of air operations. Further information from the International Red Cross stated that he had been buried in the Military Cemetery, South Cologne, Germany.

The crew of the aircraft contained one other New Zealander, Sergeant E.W. Collingwood, of Christchurch.
