August he was posted to No. 161 Squadron at Tempsford, Bedfordshire, and from this base as wireless operator air gunner of Hudson and later of Halifax bomber aircraft, took part in 45 operational flights to targets in Germany, and enemy occupied France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Norway.

P/O Morgan was a member of the crew of a Halifax bomber aircraft engaged on a special operation during the night of the 4/5th August 1944. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all the crew, including P/O Morgan were classified as missing. Later information was received from the Missing Research and Enquiry Service that the aircraft had crashed and P/O Morgan was buried in the Parish Cemetery at Huiron, approximately 5 kilometres south-west of Vitry-le-Francois. In due course his death was presumed to have occurred on the 5th August 1944.

The crew contained one other New Zealander, F/O I.A. Blaikie of Palmerston North.
