Thomas Alexander was born in Boston, England on March 22nd 1914, and came to New Zealand at an early age. He received his secondary education at the Mt. Albert Grammar School where his sports were Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, Tennis and Swimming. He later took up riding and shooting. Being unsuccessful in his application for enrolment in the Civil Reserve of Pilots in 1938 he applied for War Service on September 12th. 1939 and was accepted.
