Ronald Albrecht was born in Palmerston North on April 30th 1924 and educated at Hokowhitu and the Palmerston North Technical High School. At the time of his enlistment in the Royal New Zealnd Air Force he was a member of the Signal Corps in the Territorials at Linton. He was attested on June 19th 1943 at Harewood and trained as a Pilot. After elementary training at Tauranga, Delta and Rotorua Flight Sergeant Albrecht did his first solo flight at Harewood on December 28th 1943. Proceeding to the Service Flying Training School at Woodbourne in February, 1944, he trained on Harvard aircraft, gaining his Flying Badge on April 17th 1944. After a short N.C.O. Course he was posted to No. 4 Fighter Operational Training Unit at Ohakea towards the end of July, and became a Kittyhawk pilot. In September he passed on to the Ardmore Conversion Unit, where, after a month on Corsairs he became a pilot of No. 16 Squadron. He proceeded with this Fighter Squad- ron to Henderson Airfield at Guadalcanal on November 24th and a month later to Green Island.
