Two sales of business fronts on "J" Street were made
in April 1891 at the above rates, which , with other prospective
sales induced the Board to begin the work the month following;
the prospects being reassuring that all the indebtedness could
be easily met by further sales.

A slight defect in the title, however, together with the
unprecedented stringency in money matters ensuing prevented fur-
ther sales-execpting one of recent date. Incidentally we
will add that we have only recently realized something on one of
the above sales; and that we have had to purchase the building on
the other lot under a foreclosure of the Mechanic's liens, in
order to protect our interest in the lot.

The Academy building, therefore, was erected upon borrowed
money, at a cost of about $75,000.00; and was formally opened
on Jan. 4th, 1892; since which time the increase of patronage and
confidence in its management and teachings are encouraging in
the extreme; the present enrollment being over Nine Hundred
students with a corps of over twenty efficient teachers.
