Stamens 3; styles 3 cleft sessile or nearly so; umbel simple, 4 to 8 rayed; spikes erect, linear crowded at the upper part of the rays which are mostly elongated; scales ovate, many nerved, awl=pointed, scarcely longer than the ovate, triangular nut. Culm rough on the angles.
Dry sandy places about the Great Lakes. Mouth of the St. Louis river—Mr. J. F. McMullen. Flowers in August Height 1 to 2 feet

Dry sandy soil. Wisconsin river. Flowers in August Height 12 to 18 inches.

Found on the margin of a lake in Dane County. Also in Illinois.
