Syn. C. rostrata Muhl. not of Michx.

Sterile spike solitary, stalked, oblong; fertile
2 to 3, ovoid, oblong, or cylindrical, approximate, the
upper sessile the lower with short inclosed stalks,
diverging horizontally, densely flowered, with
long large bracts; perigynia ovate, long beaked,
with two short minutely serrulate teeth, much
longer than the lanceolate awned scale; bracts leaflike much exceeding the culm
Culm 1 to 2 feet high. Flowers in May.
Wet grounds.

Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio, Michigan
and about Lake Superior. Extends from
Florida to the Arctic regions.
