Syn. C. folliculata Michx (not of Linnaeus)

Sterile spikes solitary, stalked; fertile 1 to 3
ovoid, loosely 5 to 8 flowered, closely approximated
scarcely distinguishable, sessile or the lowest on a very
short peduncle; perigynia erect-spreading, tapering
from an ovoid nerved base into a long beak, slightly
rough towards the apex; bracts leaflike much exceeding the culm Culm 18 inches
high. Flowers in May; Wet places
in woods. --

Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Southern Indiana,
Ohio, Michigan, and about Lake Superior.
Extends from S. Carolina to the Arctic regions
