Wingless insects with 6 legs, and pecuilar [peculiar] organs of motion either on the sides
or extremity of the abdomen; not undergoing transformation;
head distinct; two antennae, which are longer than the head;
abdomen, terminated by filaments on a forked tail.

Tribe I Lepismenoe
Antennae, setaceous, divided at the base into a number of small joints;
[Palpi] very distinct, salient; each side of the under part of the
abdomen provided with a range of movable appendages
in the form of false feet; abdomen
terminated by articulated [illegible], 3, of which are the most
remarkable; body covered with small shining scales.

Genus Machilis [Latrl.] (Petrobius Leach}
Eyes compound, occupying almost all the head; abdomen beneath
with an appendage for leaping; tail with three styles of which
one is above the others + much the longest; body convex + arched above.
variabilis, Say. Superior caudal process more than double the
length of the others; false feet bi-setous at tip; colour
cinerous or iridescent varied with black (very variable)
saccharinus, (Sepisma sacchiarina Lin). Scaly, silvery; tail triple or
[terminated?] with three bristles; body oblong, tapering, antennae
as long as the body

Tribe II [Podurelloe?]
Antannae 4 jointed; no distinct or salient [illegible]; abdomen terminated by a
forked tail folding under the center when at rest, and used for
leaping; no lateral appendages.

Genus Podura Lin. Latr.
Antennae filiform, terminal joint entire; body cylindrical
trunk distinct, articulated abdomen narrow + oblong.
fasciata, Say. Body yellowish white with 4 distinct black bands;
tail black, bands paler beneath; spring white; antennae blackish;
eyes black. L. 1/20 in.
bicolor, Say body plumbeous; feet with a few hares, rather paler
at base; nails small acute; spring large white; eyes
deep black—1/10 to 3/20 in.
iricolor, Say. Body blackish iridescent; thorax with long hairs
before; abdomen hairy at tip; feet hairy whitish; head
beneath + antennae hairy. L. 1/5 in.

Smynthurus Latr.
Antennae attenuated towards the tip; ultimate joint composed of many
smaller ones; trunk and abdomen united into a rounded mass
guttatus, Say — Body yellowish white with numerous sparse white
hairs and two lubercles each side of the middle; beneath
white; antennae reddish brown, hairy; a fine of irregular spots behind the eye, eyes black; spring flesh [coloured]—1/10 in
