January SUNDAY 2 1916
New York.
Lunch with the Brewers. Afternoon tea at the W. [Person?] Hamiltons. Dinner with Hodgson at the Tokio. Evening at the Huttons after rarebit at Engels. Engels rarebits are just the same as three years ago. Miss Hutton made quite an impression on H.C.H. The years have been good to her although a little too good physically.
Mrs Brewer talked rather ignorantly about the better class Britishers, as to social class & the downtrodden working people.

January TUESDAY 4 1916
N.Y. Saw H.C.H. off on train at Jersey City. Lunch with Max [Trait?]. Visited Johnstones. Dinner with Hamiltons, theatre after "Very Good Eddie _". The show not bad. A musical comedy with some very good music, but needs a lot of toning down. Has been on the boards for only a short time. We had a party of H., Mr & Mrs H. Lawrie & myself. They are strong pro-ally. Enjoyed myself thoroughly. Only true friends are a great asset, but how few the average individual has.

January WEDNESDAY 5 1916
N.Y. Had a telegram from D. Love saying he would be in the city tomorrow, Jan 6/. Will be unable to see him here. Went to see 'The Blue Paradise' with A. Hutton. Music good but cast only fair. Dinner with Bee & left on 7.45 (Rutland). On train met a charming [unclear] Montreal lady. Spoke excellent & [unclear] English but was undoubtedly French as her mother was beside her a living proof. I did not learn who she was but gave her my card. I would have liked to have asked her then well - We discussed New York which she knows very well & we are agreed on most things, principally that we wouldn't care to live there. She knows [unclear] [unclear].
