Hon. Gov. Salt Lake City, Utah.

As a matter of fact, Joseph Hillstrom is remaining in Utah's State Prison, awaiting his death sentence, for which he is not guilty, as our constitution provides, in the fourteenth amendment which is as follows: No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. From this fundamental principle we are obliged to investigate and try out testimonials as to whether the accused is guilty or not guilty, this has not been accomplished at the hearing of the court. We still find in our Criminal Law that is the people of the venue is so prejudiced against the accused that he cannot secure a fair trial, the criminal is entitled to chance of venue.

The Criminal Law further proceeds that if the presiding judge put his weight of authority to the accused before the jury, that the accused is guilty, a new trial will be granted in favor of the accused before he is sentenced to death. If the jury has been wrongly impannelled or in any way been entertained we find the law calls for a new trial to be granted the accused before being shot, etc.,

I now demand of you that you take this significant matter up and guard this unjustly imprisoned and innocently accused Joseph Hillstrom not to be sentenced to death, as a Governor of State of Utah, I urge you that the law will be adhered too and not malice which is the records of many of our courts that a fair trial will be given in this case, as there is no exception in our law for being poor.

I address you in behalf to try to save the man Mr. Joe Hill which is to be exection October 1. I do not believe he did any crime He is only a Poor Workingman. Doing his very best for the working class people. To do good to local strikers.
