think the houses have probably been
a good deal modernised, & even in those
which retain the ornamented gabel
there is a flatness, & want of any sort
of projection to give light & shadow _

I admire the interior ofthe Ca=
thedral here more than any that I
have seen, it is less encumbered by
subdivisions, pictures, images &) [et cetera],
which enables one to enjoy the full
effect of the many pillars & arches
ofits triple aisles — We went to the
evening mass, on entering the church
we found a sermon about to be preached,
in one part of it, I took my seat, & there
discovered that it was in Flemish &
therefore unintelligible to me though very
like German _ Afterwards the evening
service commenced atthe Altar, & we
took our station about the centre ofthe
church — The great assembled multi=
tude quiet, attentive, & apparently de=
vout, the arches & pillars ofthis vast
& beautiful building illuminated by
countless lights _ The music of voices
