Reappointment

We should like to request permission to reappoint Dr. Richard Weinberg Goldsmith, as Assistant Professor of English, at annual salary of $7,500 from College funds for nine months effective September 1, 1964. This is a replacement for Roger P. Marshall. Dr. Goldsmith was first appointed to the faculty of North Carolina State as an Instructor in September, 1957. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in July, 1959, and resigned his position June 30, 1962 to work on a book.

Promotions:

Kwangil Koh, from Instructor in Mathematics, School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics, at annual salary of $8,500 from College funds to Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the same salary for nine months, effective September 1, 1964. Dr. Koh was appointed to the faculty in February of 1964 and since that time he has received his Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his B. S. 1959, and M. S. I960, from Auburn University. He is a citizen of the Republic of Korea and has an "F" Visa. He is married and has two children.

Temporary appointments of persons over the age of 65

We should like to request permission to appoint Clarence Meadd Ferguson as Visiting Professor (one-half time) of: Extension Personnel Development, for twelve months only, at a salary of $8,500 from Extension funds, effective October 1, 1964. Mr. Ferguson's date of birth is June 21, 1899.

Permission is requested to appoint Dr. Warren Lee McCabe as Visiting Professor (one-half time) of Chemical Engineering, at annual salary of $7,500 for nine months, effective September 1, 1964, salary to be paid from Trust funds. Dr. McCabe's birth date is August 7, 1899. He was formerly Administrative Dean of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and is now retired from that position.

Temporary appointment, part-time faculty member over 72 years of age.

Permission is requested to make an exception to retirement rules in order to appoint Dr. William Earl Peterson as Visiting Professor (half-time) of Animal Science, for a period of three months, effective October 1, 1964. Dr. Peterson is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Minnesota and is a world-renowned authority in the field of milk secretion. He was born on F ebruary 2, 1892.

Acting Director, D. H. Hill Library

Permission is requested to appoint Mr. L. T. Littleton as Acting Director of the D. H. Hill Library. Mr. Littleton will replace Mr. Harlan C. Brown who is retiring from the Directorship of the Library but who will remain as Associate Director. Mr. Littleton received his A. B. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; his M. A. from the University of Tennessee, and his M. S. in Library Science from the University of Illinois. He has been on leave this past year studying towards the Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. Mr. Littleton's previous employment includes eight years on the staff of the University at Chapel Hill. He also taught Library Science at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee.

Director and Associate Director, Fort Bragg Degree Program

Permission is requested to appoint Professor Horace D. Rawls as Director of the Fort Bragg Program at annual salary of $14,000 from Extension funds for twelve months effective September 1, 1964. Professor Rawls will retain his rank as Associate Professor of Sociology in the School of Liberal Arts. Dr. Rawls was first appointed to the faculty of North Carolina State in 1947 as an Instructor. He was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 1950 and to Associate Professor in 1957. He received his B. S. and M.S. degrees from North Carolina State, and his Ph.D. from Duke University.

Mr. S. Gordon Ponder, as Associate Director of the Fort Bragg Degree Program at annual salary of $11,000 for twelve months from Extension funds effective September 1, 1964. Mr. Ponder was born in Gadsden, Alabama in 1908. He received a B. S. degree from North Carolina State, and has previously been an Instructor in the Agricultural Institute. He is a Retired Colonel in the United States Army. Mr. Ponder was interviewed by Chancellor John T. Caldwell.

Salary Increase

Robert Worth Shoffner, Director of Foundatins and Development, from an annual salary of $17,000 for twelve months from College funds, to an annual salary of $18,200 effective and retroactive, July 1, 1964.

Leaves of Absence

Joseph Nowlin Boaz, Associate Professor of Architecture, requests a partial leave of absence for nine months effective September 1, 1964 to work on the editing and revision of Architectural Graphic Standards. Professor Boaz will be paid $2 500 of his present salary of $11,000.

Theodore Martin Hyman, Extension Assistant Professor of Agricultural information, requests permission to take a study leave with partial pay for one year, effective September 1, 1964. Mr. Hyman's leave would be one-quarter time, at a salary of $2,150.

Robert Lee McGuire, Extension Assistant Professor of Animal Science requests an extension of his study leave with pay (one-third time) for one year effective September 1, 1964, to continue graduate study at the University of Kentucky.

Lowell W. Neilsen, Professor of Plant Pathology, requests permission to take a leave without pay for eight months effective November 1, 1964 to enable him to accept a Fulbright Research Scholarship in New Zealand.

Charles August Rohde, Assistant Professor of Experimental Statistics, requests permission to take a leave without pay for nine months effective September 1, 1964 to accept a post-doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
