This Society, which was formed amongst other things for collecting all that is obtainable concerning the Aboriginees [Aborigines], solicits your assistance in making a collection of the Native Names of places with their meanings or the reason why the blacks gave such names to the several localities (see example).* No doubt some of the old residents in your district will be able to assist you.

In response to a Circular issued by your Society, copies of which were forwarded to this Office by the Under Secretary for Lands, I am forwarding herewith a list of 24 Native Names and meanings, which have been collected by Mr J. S. Chard, Licensed Surveyor, Armidale, from Mr Thomas Markham "Burrilda," Millee.

I have the honor to forward herewith a copy of a Circular received from "The Anthropological Society of Australasia" which has applied for assistance in collecting Native names of places in this Colony, with their meanings, and to request that you will kindly favour me by affording such information on the subject as may be in your possession, so as to assist in the objects of the Society
