a very busy 1/2 quarter, skiing and developing EDITX aids for selling. I pushed EDITX is the 2nd 1/2 quarter to no avail and went on a one week vacation in March to job hunt. I also considered working for Xerox then. This all culminated in my deciding on Ryan McFarland and getting that job in the 1st 1/2 of spring quarter. Then, as I say, I started having a few very basic thoughts in the 2nd 1/2.

In summer, the first 1/2 was fun + games + exploring Southern Cal. Then the 2nd 1/2 was very full of thoughts. So before this year (Oct '77 - Sep 78) I had 2 thoughtful 1/2 quarters, the 2nd 1/2s of Spring and summer. Indeed the 2nd 1/2 of that year's (Oct 76-Sep 77) fall + winter were also thoughtful but those thoughts are well understood. Spring and Summer '77 are discussed under WORK.

As an overview (very brief) of this last year, I spent October reading a lot (the Bible, [Knuth?], Martin's Intro to DBMS) and researching other things I may find of interest. Also took trip to Albq on Oct 16 and to SF Oct 30 with Chip. Then first half of November was spent screwing

around on the Nude Beach at Palos Verdes. Wow! Very beautiful people. So free.

Then it got cold + Chip + I went to Phily for Thanksgiving. Very important trip as it planted the seed for my return to Albq. The rest of that second half was spent in thoughts of my return to Albuquerque + general Christmas things.

I decided to return and did so and Chip and I moved into a very nice house which has served us wonderfully. I read a lot that first 1/4. I had decided at Christmas to read + study History, American Politics and Religion, in light of the "actual," the "process," and the "idea" respectively and leave behind Law, economics, sociology, psychology, cummunication, law, and education "to advisers" (as I put it). Even less tractable, I affirmed, weere art, drama, literature, anthropology, music, etc. Lastly I began to read + study MANAGEMENT. I read A LOT because I had always done well in Math, Science, Languages; but I received B's in 7th + 8th grade English, B+s in 9th + 10th Engl, A- in 11 and A in 12th grade Engl. I did quite well (A-) in 9th grade Medieval history and 12th grade American History. But the course I missed out on was Modern History.

I took it but it wasn't rewarding like American Gov't at SU wasn't rewarding. There was not enough effort (time) available to them. So I decided to study these two items to fill out the gaps in my education. I never really did well in art or music (B+s) but I contend they can't really be studied till one has developed reasonably accurate emotions, certainly not high school or college level, unless their sense of art/music/drama is innate.

So I studied + read and also watched Anna Karenina on PBS (as a series). One other piece of drama I saw was "Harvey" at the Little Theatre. There was a line: "I used to be smart, now I'm pleasant" I highly recommend being pleasant." I saw this as keynote of what my life may become. I also went to Church every Sunday. The last Sunday sermon was about "What do you want." This became the theme for Spring 1/4. No more church after winter for the time being.

Miscellaneous: find a house, shop for TV, appliances, drapes, wall coverings, made list of what Chip + I own, Chip's birthday party, finished dental work, went for physical exam, had auto accident, read a lot besides stuff

mentioned above, made list of stuff to do every six months on car, considered alternative works (like generalized handy list processor, and working with Bob Greenberg on UNIX software, audio response devices), did taxes.

At end of first 12 weeks (Apr 9), I was finished with first quarter; MSoft work was on its course, last Anna K was that night, had finished taxes prev Thursday was payday, had completed all history, poli sci, religion that I was interested in. Was done with all reading but planned to read Drucker on managers in 2nd 1/4. I decided to put off work of my own interest for the spring + instead enjoy life, playing tennis, swimming, driving, Greenberg, generally having fun. I planned on studying the stock market too, and to get a grasp on what I really want. To philosophize quite a bit. I had only done this sporadically over the first half of the year (Oct 77 - Sept 78).

One last item for note of Winter quarter: I took a trip in late February to California to see Seidel in San Diego and West Coast Computer Faire in San Jose. (Remember how it rained in SD and the evergreens

outside the room and how much like Washington it seemed.) I met Dick Wallman at WCCF and started to arrange for his DBMS package. That was such a godsend. Also remember how you disliked the guys you met, but that was only because you were picky: could have had ex-PE teacher in SD + nice legs at Stanford.

In the 2nd 1/4, SPRING, I read less but still quite a bit. I read about stocks and personal finances (the Moneybook). I went to Amwest on my birthday and got started in stocks. They had great effect on my thoughts. Bought Minerals May 16. Indeed instead of reading much during the 2nd 1/2 of spring I thought + played a lot. Most of the thoughts therefrom and from 2nd 1/2 of summer are the seeds of my herein written thoughts, as are the Spring ans Summer second half quarters of 1977. It seems like Spring and Summer are my growing times! Earthy. Also shopped for new car. Also trip to Cromemco (good) + NCC (bad). WR beach, PU, Redondo, Ripples, Anaheim

Then I entered summer quarter with my mind made up to study every morning. Decided on Cumbres Toltec trip 4th of July which inspired the following 12 weeks. Very quiet between Chip + me though. The first six weeks (before vacation) I did the following. I spent forty five minutes
