These were printed in ye type of ye older time upon ye common brown paper and sealed and tied with ye seal and ye color of ye University of Stanford. Therefore, ye evening of ye twenty second found Roble Hall filled with the odors from pinks and yellow roses, red carnations, white and purple violets and pink almond blossoms, which here and there ornamented tables, mantles and piano, while ye balustrades were adorned with ye rich green ivy as were also ye large colonial fire places in ye lower hall. In the midst of all this beauty were "ye mistress and ye maidens", in ye costumes of ye olden time and ye powdered hair, rivalling in beauty ye flowers and awaiting ye guests. When these arrived, some of ye quaintly attired and be-powdered maidens met them in ye lower hall and after making ye courtesy of ye olden time showed them where to dispose of ye coats and hats. Then they passed up to ye second floor where other maidens met them and after adorning them each with a small gilt hatchet on which was printed "February 22, 1892" and which was also tied with a small piece of cardinal ribbon, took them to meet Martha (Miss Thompson) whose hair needed no powdering and whose manner and attractions could not have been surpassed by her namesake.

Then each youth and maiden began to hunt for the number which corresponded to the one on his or her hatchet and this was not an easy task
