Questions
Mary Grady mentioned that lightning hit a field nearby her
home and a neighbor says that it'll cause mushrooms to
sprout up. Is this true? No one was sure so Mary was
asked to report back any mushroom sightings. Lydia Haviland
mentioned that the last 3 houses she's lived in have been
struck by lightening and she reports no subsequent
appearances of mushrooms.
Harold Earp wanted to know when to tell that a watermelon
is ripe. When the tendril next to the vine dries the melon
should be picked.
Buzz Hussman has a yellow jacket problems. To wit: 2 holes
4 feet apart. Most agreed that at night was the best time
to deal with the pests. Various methods suggested were
sevin, gasoline, and hornet spray.
Tom Farquhar asked Steve Harcy what sort of operation he
has. Mr. Harcy responded that he grows about 120 varieties
and he accomodates mail order sales only because of
restrictive covenants in his community. It's a small
operation by commercial standards and he welcomes visitors.
Harold Earp was asked about the goldfish in his waterlily
ponds. Said they did a great job controlling mosquitoes.
Steve Harcy was asked how he keeps labels on his stock.
Inked engraved labels last about a year before having to be
re-inked.

Owing to our guest's worthy presentation the hour had gotten
late. We thanked the Earps for hosting a lovely evening and
agreed to meet next on September 6 at the Cedars.
