The minutes of the last meeting held 7th inst. were read and approved.

The Senate agreed to sustain the attendance of W.E D'Argent on the classes of senior Latin and senior mathematics as sufficient to entitle him to appear at the University examination in these subjects.

On a review of the written examinations in Arts the Senate sustained the University examination of the following undergraduates named in the order of merit in each subject:

[margin]deficient attendance[/margin]

The Senate having considered the petitions of Messrs McLeod, Pinkerton, Irvine and Brown all agreed to count their attendance as a full session though amounting to less than four fifths thereof. The Senate also granted a petition to the same effect presented by M.L. Snook but rebuked him for the deficiency in his attendance for which there seemed no necessity, and warned him that a similarity irregularity hereafter on his part will not be condoned.

[margin]Spankie not to be examined in Rh. Eng. [/margin]

Having taken up a second petition of Wm. Spankie for permission to appear at the examination in rhetoric and English literature in addition to the four subjects in which the Senate agreed at its last meeting that he might appear, the Senate resolved to adhere to their former decision, considering it objectionable for a student to aqttempt more than four subjects in one session, epecially when the class attendance is so deficient as in Mr. Spankie's case.

There was read a letter from V.V. Ashford, Esq. in reference to the refusal of the Senate to admit his printed Essay on the County of Carleton into the competition for the Tassie Prize. The Senate having considered the same intructed the Secretary to inform Mr. Ashford tht they must

[margin]LL.D.[/margin] The Vice Principal and Secretary were appointed to draw up a minute in regard to the conferring of the degree of LL.D. upon the Marquis of Lorne Governor General of Canada. The Senate resolved to confer and hereby do confer the aforesaid degree of Doctor of Laws upon the Marquis of Lorne in view of his well known literary attainments.

The Secretary laid before the Senate a letter from Prof. Hart but for want of time the Senate was compelled to defer the consideration of it.
