My dear Mother,
I am writing this letter today for a
special purpose. I have just had a note
from Aunt John saying that she & Uncle
John are going away to the seaside on
Thursday just for at least a fortnight,
but saying that they would be very glad
for me to stay in the house, as the servants
will be there. Now I don't at all relish
the idea of living in that desolate place
alone, so I think I will do this. I will
write to Lane and accept his invitation
