JUNIOR COMMON ROOM. BRASENOSE COLLEGE, OXFORD.

June: 15: '96

My dear Mother, I am writing this letter today for a special purpose. I have just had a note from Aunt John saying that she & Uncle John are going away to the seaside on Thursday just for at least a fortnight, but saying that they would be very glad for me to stay in the house, as the servants will be there. Now I don't at all relish the idea of living in that desolate place alone, so I think I will do this. I will write to Lane and accept his invitation

to stay at the Albany. But as I don't want to trespass upon his hospitality, I will only stay Monday & Tuesday night, during wh. I could get all the things done that I want. Then as the house will be full of delegates, I propose to go to Peebles by the Midland Railway on the Wednesday, and stay there till Monday. The fare will be the same and the route will be through new country. If you think this is a good plan, I will write to Aunt Kate. Please wire your reply, as I must write to Aunt John so that she may get it before Thursday.

I have got four MSS. again this week. I went to Mansfield yesterday, but Fairbairn was not preaching, having got a sore throat. The headmaster of some school, whose name I didn't catch, took his place. He preached rather well, but I didn't hear him properly.

My story is in Black & White this week. It is illustrated in the most fearful & wonderful way. The heat here is still terrible. I hope you are all well at home & had good attendances yesterday.

Love to all Your affectionate son John Buchan
