Underwriters Toronto was read. Re classification of
Kingston

A Communication from Mr Smith President Underwriters
Toronto was read in reference to incendiary fires in
Kingston. Referred to the Mayor.

A Communication from JC Swain was read stating
he will institute an action for alledged damages to premises.
Referred to the Committee on Streets to report.

A communication from Martin Strachan & Son
was read asking for the use of Fire Engine at their
place of business Barriefield in the event of Fire. Referred
to the Committee on Fire, Water and Gas.

A Communication from the members of the City
Fire Department was read tendering resignation.

Also from Mr Matthew Bateson Chief of the Kingston
Fire Department tendering resignation. Both communications
were referred to the Committee on Fire Water and Gas

Ald Gildersleeve here entered.

A Communication from James Wilson Esquire Manager
Water Works was read stating the Company will hold the City
liable for payment of special vote of Hydrant as long as
it remains attached to the Company's main. Referred to the
Committee on Fire, Water and Gas

A Communication from James Shannon Esquire Secretary
Board of Trade was read Re Chemical Engine and increase
of Police Force - the part of Communication respecting chemical
engine was referred to the Committee on Fire, Water and
Gas

On motion of Ald Whiting seconded by Ald Birmingham
Resolved, That in the opinion of this Council
it is deemed expedient to increase the Police Force
permanently but that the Police Commissioners should in
this emergency employ the services of a detective and
on special occasions add temporary constables

Ald Durn brought up the petition of William G
Strainge Re erecting Brick veneered buildings. Referred
to the Committee on Fire Water and Gas

The tender of JH Taylor for the Office of Chimney
Viewer &c was read and referred to the Committee on
Fire Water and Gas

Ald Hobart from the Committee on Finance and
accounts brought up a Report (Number 372 Book E)
which was read and adopted.

The Chairman from the Committee on Fire Water
and Gas brought up a Report (Number 373 Book E)
which was read and adopted.
