Attorney Genls [sic] Office Brisbane 8th January 1862

[in left margin] 62/174

Sir,

I have the honor to forward to you certain depositions taken by Mr Dutton J.P. at a magisterial enquiry into the cause of the death of two aboriginal natives found dead on Mr James Steeles [sic] Station of Fairfield and which investigation appears to have been held on the complaint of Mr Steele who charges Lieutt Morehead of the Native Police with the murder of the said Aboriginals —

The evidence fails entirely in my opinion to substantiate a charge of murder against Lieutt Morehead but I have deemed it to be my duty to forward the depositions to you for your preusal —

I have the honor to request that the documents may be returned for the purpose of being filed in this Office in the usual manner —

I have the honor to remain

Sir

Your most obedt Servant
