Andover July 13th 1853.
My Fond Parents,
My return to Andover upon the
morning of July 5th was attended with several hindrances, which
by way of remembrance I will relate. Every thing was right
until, when about stepping on board of the cars in the Maine depot
we were told the train did not stop short of Lawrence. This was
a pretty fix; the time had been altered + no one knew anything
about it except a surly conductor. All we could learn from
him was the consoling fact that "the train for Andover goes at
1/2 past 10. I was not the only one disappointed, there were some dozen
or fifteen of us who had bought our tickets + were ready to start.
Among the number was one of our teachers, who seemed to take it
pretty cooly, and 1/2 a dozen Theologues. Of course their presence +
especially that of the teacher relieved us considerably, and afterwards
as we found, was of much help, for through their influence
a gentleman - the superintendent I suppose - told the conductor
to let us out at Andover. So we jumped aboard, but still
had to wait half an hour. At 1/4 past 8 we started, and we thought so
after all we should be in time for recitation, when our worthy
conductor came along + says - you will have to go to Lawrence +
come back in the next train. As we could not help ourselves
took it fair + easy, and passed through Andover with a

P.S. As I have to purchase some articles of furniture for my chum
next term I would like 2 dollars more. This I hope will be my
last call for money. I should not now make it, were not the circumstances
such as they are
