have to be made, and a professor also employed to assist in
carrying on the work, and when the Board felt able to take
such action and employ an additional professor then
the subject of his resignation as President might come
up for further consideration
Judge Welch thereupon offered the following resolutions
Resolved,
That the Board entertains a very high opinion of the ability
and competency of W.H. Scott as President of the University
and believe that his services as such cannot safely be dis-
pensed with or superceded by any one who would be
more careful to the institution
Resolved, therefore that president
Scott be earnestly requested to withdraw his resignation
tendered to the Board. Which upon motion was adopted
The resignation of President Scott was as follows
Resignation of President Scott
Athens Ohio June 13 1881
Resignation
"Gentlemen
I hereby tender my resignation as President
of the Ohio University, to take effect not later than
the next annual meeting of the Board and as much
earlier as you may think the interests of the institution
will permit
I take this step partly from the belief that
the Board is now in a position to secure the services
of a President whose abilities and tastes are
better adopted to the duties of the office and
partly from a desire to be relieved of a charge
which is in some respects uncongenial and
which seriously interfere with such a provocation
of study as is indispensable to a high standard
of professional work
Very respectfully
To the Board of Trustees WH Scott"
