faculties should encourage the voluntary giving
of such testimony; + that such testimony should
be required of students whenever in the judgment
of a faculty such requisition shall be deemed
advisable."
This, to be sure, is vague + incongruent
but it shows, quite as well as a correspondence
would have done, how far our college faculties
are willing to write on some settled policy of
administration for such cases.
A vacancy now occur in the
preparatory department by the resignation of
the principal, Rev. M.S. Vail, who gives under
an appointment by his church, as a missionary
teacher to Japan. It will devolve upon the
Board at its present session to choose his successor.
I would suggest a return to the arrangement
that existed from 1869 to 1872. Under that
arrangement there was no principal of the
preparatory department, but the department of
ancient languages was divided into two,- one of
Greek + one of Latin. For the present a professor
of Greek can be secured at about the same salary
that we now pay to the principal; + a man of
higher scholarship + greater experience can be
obtained for the professorship than for the
principalship. The names + testimonials of
candidates are here with submitted.
The Faculty recommend for the
degree of Bachelor of Arts in course, Emma R. Dana,
Mary Ames de Steigner, Adam J. Hawk and
William A. Longbow; for the degree of Bachelor of
Science, Philander Jacobs + James W. Sands.
